Bio:Welcome to Spenser's Universe As you no doubt know by now, his version of events varies greatly in many ways from that of J.K. Rowling's. With sixty-some stories, all interrelated to a degree, I find that I can't, and don't, want to do away with his version of things. Characters such as the quiet Animal Healer Brandon Llewellyn, Ginny's identical distant relatives Maggie and Sara, the heroic, beer-loving Gun'r Solo and the mischievous half-Leprecaun Finian Wilco will never appear in Rowling's world. Spenser tries to explain that she wrote Harry's biography differently for her Muggle readers, but this is simply my lame excuse. I'll continue with this universe for the time being, and I hope that you who have come to enjoy his world will still have a bit of fun with it.
For those who have not met him before, Spenser Robert Hemmingway is a young Wizard from Oregon who spent his last school year at Hogwarts. He has collected stories from his friends there, and fortunately this has included Harry and Ginny. Unfortunately, he is mischievously evil, and writes like...well, an American.
In response to the email inquiries I have received, I will describe the character as being medium height, medium build, hazel eyes with short-cropped curly brown hair (just like my coworker's mischievous son). I have made his birthday 17 July 1980 (the month and day when I read how Harry broke up with Ginny, and I decided to promote their being together again). Luna Lovegood is his best friend, which makes my daughter happy and provides me (and Spenser) with some interesting story ideas; I won't offer any spoilers beyond that. I intentionally did not pattern him after myself (what fun would that be?). I'm a grumpy old such-and-such who more resembles our Alastor 'Mad-Eye" Moody.
Spenser was created so that I could observe the stories to get a good perspective, explain those Americanisms, and to blame when the story falls flat on its face. Somehow, he has started to be involved in some of those stories as well. Also, I spell his name with two M's to distinguish him from the great Ernest Hemingway, to whom he is NOT related. The name is from Spenser Avenue and Hemingway Street, two places I lived as a child.
I am Eric, a retired soldier (twenty-two years with the Oregon National Guard, including Bosnia and Iraq deployments). Like Spenser, I am a hopeless romantic, have an evil, yet clean sense of humor, and enjoy improvising stories for my family and friends.
Stories Chronology
I have received a few requests now asking me to provide a list of the order that you might want to read my stories. They all seem to interrelate, at least a little, and some introduce characters and situations used in later stories. If one or two seem to be out of order, it is because Spenser is reminiscing (please note the central story involved). Please remember that this is Spenser's Universe.

A Marvelous ...Valentine's Day Gift? by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 9]
*** Winner of Serious/Silliness in the Muggle Technology Challenge *** Harry and Ginny don't know what to make of George and Fred's latest invention. It's Muggle technology, but the couple...no one in fact...knows what it is, how it works, or what it's supposed to do. It's Valentine's Day though, and Ginny deserves a marvelous gift.

A Working Title? by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 18]
** Winner of Best Humor & Best Adventure in the Summer Jobs Challenge ** "Summer time and the living is easy..." Well at least for Harry and friends most of the time with their summer intern jobs. It builds character! What's the worst that could happen?
|
Abra Cadabba Doo? by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 8]
The Noble and Ancient House of Black? Says who? Just how noble and just how ancient is it exactly? One extremely inquisitive seven-year-old is about to find out. One extremely wicked Wizard is about to get into all sorts of trouble telling him.

Actually…I’ve Never Met A Dragon I Didn’t Like by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 9]
No, it is not a story about Bruce Lee. It is the first ever Harry Potter nature documentary! The friends set out to do a favor for Charlie, and in turn are done several by another new acquaintance. If in the process, someone learns something...well so much the better.

And Now For Something Completely Different by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 10]
Writing can be extremely beneficial to the heart and soul. It’s the editors, critics, and literary reviewers that are dangerous. Ginny takes time to chronicle her first week at school with Harry, and she does it as only a lovesick eleven-year-old can. Seriously—have the chicken for supper! This is a companion story to my other Challenge entry For What It’s Worth, and either can be read first.
|
And Now You Know…The Rest Of The Story by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 24]
** Winner of Most Humorous in the When Ginny Met Harry Challenge ** We all know how they first met, but even the best stories can sometimes omit a few details, such as a drunken owl, a crossdressing Weasley brother, a famous explorer, a bird whisperer and another excellent chili recipe. Written for the 2007 When Harry Met Ginny Challenge.
|
Antidisestablishmentarianism! by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 8]
Someone wants the Deathly Hallows. They want to dissect them, analyze them, place them under a microscope, and to find a simple, scientific explanation for their capabilities. Sometimes even a Wizarding government forgets the source of magic. Surprisingly, Harry and Ginny want to go out of their way to help, once they’ve retrieved the artifacts from their plain-sight hiding places in Diagon Alley. Understand? Well, there is a great deal of misunderstanding that day.
A follow-on to my other Challenge entry “It’s Kind of Fun Doing the Impossible”.

Beach Blanket Bat Bogey by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 4]
“You know we're goin' to Surf City, gonna have some fun.” Harry, Ginny and friends make use of a three day layover in California for a little sun, surf and music! Frankie and Annette are covering their eyes at the fun and Ron at Ginny’s driving. “Kowabunga dudes!”

Brass Monkeys by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 9]
** Winner (a tie) of Creative Adaptation in the Baby, It’s Cold Outside Challenge ** Harry has plans for the evening; very detailed plans involving a certain pretty redhead, a good bottle of wine and a special song they’ve come to love. Unfortunately for Harry, the best laid plans of mice and Wizards don’t always take cold weather into account.

Cosmic Cow Tipping And Temporal Sins by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 17]
The universe has been changed! Harry agrees to heed a strange warning he has been given, and will return to Hogwarts for his seventh year. He’s able to be with Ginny, albeit in secret. Before they can even arrive there however, Harry and Ginny are thrust into the first of a series of special journeys, none of which they will remember afterward. No worries…or very few at least. Spenser is once again on hand to observe and chronicle their adventures…while trying to keep the temporal scoundrels away from of his favorite couple. This is a direct follow-on to The Life and Times of a Human Cannonball.

** Winner of Most Adventurous in the Muggle Field Trip Challenge ** What an incredible idea they've come up with! Baby-sit a few Muggle Studies students, and get a nice vacation in Vienna, Austria. What could possibly go wrong? All they have to do is ensure the change machines don't break down, and they'll all have a marvelous time. Written for the Muggle Field Trip 2007 Challenge.

Finnigan’s Romance…And Other Natural Disasters by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 8]
"There is someone for everyone," we have all heard, and no one believes this more than Ginny. She may even chant it in her sleep (in response to Harry's occasional snoring). In one case however, she may have crossed the line while trying to prove the principle. Can Harry rein in a determined Ginny? Can Seamus Finnigan ever find true happiness? Can Ron ever learn the Zen of Barbeque? Hmm...maybe.

For What It's Worth by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 10]
Ginny is about to begin her first year of school at Hogwarts. It should be a joyfully momentous time. Arthur and Molly already have the champagne out and are getting ready to rent her room. Something is wrong between Harry and Ginny however, and it might very well cripple any chance the happy couple could ever have of being…happy. Would one or the other ever allow that to happen? For what it’s worth, no one else thinks so either. Could someone please get that owl a cup of strong coffee?
This Challenge entry now has a companion story, And Now For Something Completely Different.

Forensic Accounting--A Love Story by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 7]
*** Winner of Best Overall in The Cost of Everything Challenge *** Harry and Ginny encounter the world of double-entry bookkeeping. Harry and Ginny next plan to learn Greek. To the pair there is no difference, Oh, except that Harry may not be being cheated by anyone from Athens. Weird expenditures at Hogwarts may be another matter. Who are you going to call?
|
Great Scott! by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 12]
** Winner of Adventure in the “Twin Travel” Challenge ** For Arthur and Molly Weasley becoming grandparents was the last thing on their minds--no what happened at the Burrow that afternoon would have had to have been. Great Scott! How will everyone deal with this new challenge? Of course Harry and Ginny will make great parents. They shop at Wizardmart all the time.

Have Wand, Will Travel by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 9]
*** Winner of Most Sneakiness in the Asylum Challenge *** It's a close call for Ginny. An extremely unlikely new acquaintance comes into Harry's and her life as a result. It's someone who needs to travel far, fast, and quietly...if she can get everyone to trust her enough to help.

It’s The Great Pumpkin Harry Potter! by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 9]
Halloween is celebrated around the world, but the tradition that is Trick or Treating actually varies considerably from place-to-place. Neither Harry nor his family has ever had the opportunity to enjoy the experience. Why shouldn’t they learn about it from undisputed authorities? If they’re not available, how about asking that one kid with the big nose?

Quidditch is an amazing sport! It can also become all encompassing…just as many things in life may be. The wonderful thing about some situations is that as intense as they seem, they are still magical when viewed through a child’s eyes. It’s a good thing to remember, and sometimes a fun lesson to learn. "Youse get my drift?"

Never Sniff A Gift Hippogriff by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 12]
** Winner of Best Overall in the The Marauders Map Challenge ** ** Winner of Best Secrets, a tie, in the The Marauders Map Challenge ** One should never sniff a hippogriff, whether or not it’s a gift. Do you have any idea what those things eat? Ginny has other concerns however, and very little patience for annoying conundrums...or their associated causes. Someone is messing with history--hers and Harry’s. It’s suddenly not the same one from Harry’s biography and that adds to the mystery. Secrets, exploding popinjays and more secrets? Romancing The Brick by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 7]
There are certain cosmic forces in the universe that we will never understand. There are constants that will be true regardless of the reality being experienced. Hogwarts is dying and once again Harry is called upon to be the hero, but is the castle all that he will help rebuild?

Saving Snape by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 3]
Harry and Ginny are not only heroes, they’re a constant in the multiverse, and there are almost as many alternative realities as there are ‘what ifs’ to create them. In one such the couple decides to test a possibility and maybe do something good in the process. Spenser Hemmingway on the other hand is often inept, always accident-prone and hardly ever self-assured. He always wants to lend a hand though, and usually gets through Harry and Ginny’s adventures by sheer, dumb luck. Now how am I going to have the poor guy help Harry and Ginny and Harry and Ginny and even Harry and Ginny, while keeping them away from Harry and Ginny? A missing chapter from Cosmic Cowtipping and Temporal Sins.

The Best Of Times by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 49]
Everyone returns to Hogwarts for Ginny and Luna’s seventh year. The battle this time is not just with the defeated Death Eaters, but rather against all those forces that will prevent them from finding the peace and normalcy they all so strongly desire. This third book is a follow-on from The Three Ginny's, Nelly Bly and my numerous short stories; it is the finale in the Three Ginnys' Trilogy.
If anyone is interested, I've turned a chapter from this story into an actual, hardcopy book. It's The Juggler's Girl by E. Spenser Bronson. Look for it at garage sales and in bargain bins everywhere. Sorry, it's not a Harry/Ginny story.

The Three Ginnys by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 58]
Perspective is everything. Harry and Ginny encounter two people very much like themselves, and with Ron and Hermione, experience a new world very much unlike their own less-Mugglized England. The lessons that they learn from their experiences give them new insight into love, family, courage and sacrifice. This is the first volume in the Three Ginnys Trilogy. Its original title was Harry Potter In America.

Wings! by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 7]
“To sleep--perchance to dream, ay, there’s the rub; for in that sleep of death what dreams may come?” For Ginny, the answer to Hamlet’s question may finally be answered. For a small child, the answer must be avoided at all costs. For a loving mother and grandmother, the answer is the key to her family’s future. For someone from another future, a valuable opportunity has presented itself. Naturally, all of it leads to yet another story for our favorite inept carpenter. By the way, yes folks--Zu Zu Bailey’s teacher was correct.

Wizard Jam by Spenser Hemmingway [Reviews - 7]
For Harry, Ginny, and friends, few things are as important or as challenging as a good game of Quidditch. The game reaches a new level with a visit from an extremely...looney new team. A bit of a follow on from Just a Friendly Game of Quidditch.

Harry and Ginny react to inappropriate steps taken to acquire them, but not in exactly the way you might think. My fiftieth story at Sink Into Your Eyes.
I've posted a companion story to this, Antidisestablishmentarianism!
