Harry stared outside at the unusually bright and sunny April day. April had just started of Harry’s seventh year and all of the students had recently become very anxious to get outside and do something. Hermione, the Creevy brothers, and some other muggle-borns seemed to be concocting an activity of some kind but Harry had no idea what it could be.
“Why don’t we just have a huge Quidditch Tournament or something?” said Ron enthusiastically, “That’s something we can all agree on right?”
“No Ron. That is not something we can agree on! We want to do something different.” said Hermione as she sat down at the common room table, “Something…original.” Hermione sat there thinking for a while, mumbling. “Spring…hot…fun…food…hot dog…” She suddenly shot up from her seat and Ron jumped in surprise. “That’s it!”
“What’s it?” asked Ron and Harry at the same time.
“Oh! It’s perfect! I have to tell the others! Oh Dumbledore will love this! We can have sack races!” Hermione quickly gathered her things and shot out of the common room.
“I hate it when she does that.” groaned Harry.
“What in the world is a sack race?” groaned Ron.
~*~
Harry and Ron sat in the common room from quite a while waiting for Hermione to come back. Ron was flicking little fluff balls from the carpet and making a little pile beside Harry.
“So…what do you wanna do?” asked Harry.
“I dunno. What do you wanna do?” asked Ron.
“If I knew what I wanted to do, would I ask you what you wanted to do? ‘Cause if I knew what I wanted to do I would just ask you to do it with me and I’d just forget about what you wanted to do.”
“What?”
At that moment, Hermione came through the common room doors with a bunch of papers in her hands. She began putting them up on the walls and stuck one on the message board.
“What are those?” asked Ron as he got up from the floor.
“Flyers! Hogwarts is having its first Muggle-style Outdoor Day on Saturday, by the lake, with a Barbeque picnic and activities.” Hermione slapped another flyer on the common room door.
“A Barbra-what?” asked Ron as he frantically grabbed one of the flyers. “Muggle-style? I can’t do muggle-style! I’m no good with muggle stuff!”
A million things were going through Harry’s head. A barbeque? He knew what they were but he had never been to one. There were a whole bunch of games listed on the flyer that he had never played but only seen them being played on television.
“Look!” shouted Ron, “There’s even a contest for Best Dressed Muggle Couple! I’m doomed.”
“Ron, relax. I’m the other half of our couple, remember?” smiled Hermione, kissing him on the cheek. Harry smiled slightly at the couple. They had gotten together in the previous year and Harry was happy but sometimes he just felt left out. Harry glanced at the rest of the activities on the flyer.
-His & Her Three-Legged Race
-Boy/Girl Relay Race
-Best Dressed Muggle Couple
“Hermione,” said Harry in a slightly nervous tone, “Why are half the activities on the list couple activities?”
“Lavender joined our group and added them.” she said rolling her eyes into the back of her head.
“But-but that’s not fair! I’m not a couple! I’m only one person!” said Harry frantically.
“You two are the most paranoid people I have ever seen.” Hermione shook her head at the both of them. “Harry, you know lots of girls.”
“Oh yeah? Name one!” he said crossing his arms.
“Well…how about Ginny.”
At that moment, Ginny Weasley waltzed into the common room, her long red hair following behind her.
“Did someone mention my name?” she asked picking up a flyer from the stack in Hermione’s hands. Harry had always thought of Ginny as the cute red headed sister of his best friend. She was quite fun to be around and they had become fairly good friends over the last year or so. He didn’t know why he didn’t think of her before.
“Muggle-style? Oh no.” said Ginny staring at the dreaded piece of paper.
“Not you too Ginny! Come on, it’ll be fun! I promise!” said Hermione with glee.
“Oh no. Lavender had something to do with the couple thing didn’t she!” Harry was pleased to see that he wasn’t the only one who was worried about couple events.
“Oh yeah, she did.” said Hermione absent-mindedly, “By the way Ginny, about that couple thing, do you think you and Harry could pair up or something?”
Harry’s heart was pounding in his chest. Did Hermione really have to ask her like that! Harry had to admit deep inside he felt sort of nervous when he was with Ginny. He couldn’t ask her to be a couple with him if they weren’t even a couple!
“You mean for Saturday?” she asked. She was looking right at him now. Harry supposed she was looking from some kind of emotion in his face. “Well…sure I guess. Why not? Then I won’t be so alone. You know muggle stuff too right Harry?”
“Yeah, I suppose.” he said nervously. The truth was that Harry didn’t even know if he wanted to go.
“Well I better get going if I want people to know that we’re having a BBQ tomorrow!” Hermione waved at them all and left the common room in a hurry once again.
~*~
Ginny stepped out into the sunshine. It was a beautiful day just the like the one before. She had put on her favorite summer skirt and a tank top over her bikini. She was planning on going swimming that day. Hermione, the Creevey brothers, Dean, Justin, and Seamus were already setting up games and little picnic blankets with baskets near the lake. Ginny walked over to Dean who was wearing the most ridiculous clothes she had ever seen.
“Dean, what in the world are you wearing?” asked Ginny looking him up and down.
“Oh, do you like it? Lots of muggle guys wear this. It’s totally gangster, yo.” Dean gave her an odd hand gesture and pulled up his overly large pants that were practically falling off his butt. Ginny was just trying her hardest not to laugh.
More students were coming outside for the festivities. Ron had joined her and they watched as the others came out.
“Where’s Harry?” asked Ginny nervously pulling at her skirt. She was so happy that she had gotten the chance to come here with Harry. It would be the perfect time to let him know how she really felt.
“He’ll be here in a minute.” said Ron casually.
“If he’s dressed like Dean, I’ll kill him.” Ginny looked around and spotted Draco Malfoy and his usual cronies filing in. She was surprised that they had come. She became even more surprised when she realized that while she was thinking, Malfoy had suddenly stopped being fully dressed. He was clearly in swim trunks standing near the lake. “Wow…” Ginny thought out loud, “Quidditch playing is definitely doing him some good.”
“Ginny?” Ginny looked up and saw Harry standing in front of her with a weird look on his face. “Were you just checking out Malfoy?”
“What?” Harry began to laugh at Ginny alarmed looking face. “I was not!”
“Quidditch playing is definitely doing him some good? You disgust me…” said Harry shaking his head jokingly and walking away. Ginny was blushing so hard that she could feel the heat radiating off her face. She looked at Malfoy one more time, giggled slightly, and walked away.
~*~
Harry was quietly laughing to himself. He couldn’t believe what he had just seen or heard for that matter! But something just hit him. Ginny didn’t really like Malfoy did she? Harry’s brain suddenly snapped back into reality and realized that that could never…ever happen. “Well…okay maybe that could happen.” Harry thought out loud, “No! Never!”
“Harry are you okay?” asked Ginny as she caught up with him.
“Huh? Oh! Yeah.” he replied. There was an awkward silence between them for a while but Harry broke it. “So…what do you wanna do?”
“I dunno, what do you wanna do?”
“If I knew…um never mind. How about we go for a quick swim first?”
“Sure.” Ginny grabbed Harry’s hand and his pulse quickened. But when she let go it was worse. She began taking off her shirt and Harry’s heart almost stopped. Ginny jumped in with a splash and flicks of water hit Harry’s glasses. As he was watching her in the water, he couldn’t help but think. “Hmmm, I’d love to get into a sack with her.” Harry almost screamed as someone tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around and it was Ron.
“Harry, stop staring at my sister.” he told him casually.
“What?” asked Harry looking dazed.
“Just stop looking at her like that. It’s grossing me out.” Ron turned around leaving a very confused Harry behind. Ron turned back to Harry suddenly. “Oh and by the way Harry, I checked the sacks out, there’s no way you could fit two people in one.” Ron grinned and walked away. Harry realized that he really had to stop thinking out loud.
“Hey! Potter! You coming in or what!” shouted Ginny from the water. Harry took off his muggle clothes and jumped in with her. The water was surprisingly warm when he got in. Harry was actually enjoying himself when a large dose of water was splashed into his face. Ginny laughed her head off and then she splashed him again.
“Hey!” he said laughing. He splashed her and she splashed him back and soon it became a full out splashing war between the two. Suddenly the splashing stopped. The water calmed and Harry looked around the water but Ginny couldn’t be seen. Where in the world did she get to?
“Ginny?” Harry shouted uncertainly, “Ginny!” He was starting to become panicked but then someone or something jumped him from behind. Ginny was on his back laughing hysterically. She leapt off and held onto the edge of the lake for support.
“That was not funny! I thought you had drowned or something!” shouted Harry splashing her again.
“I couldn’t help it! It was so fun!” she said still holding her stomach. Ginny got out of the water and squeezed the water out of her hair. Harry followed suit and they both put their clothes over their damp bathing suits.
Ginny grabbed Harry’s hand again, eager to get to play a game. “Ooo! Let’s do the three-legged race!”
Harry agreed and they both strapped up for it. They decided that they better practice first. “Okay,” said Ginny, “First you step with the outside leg and then the inside leg.” As they were practicing, Harry realized that he had no clue where to put his hands. That is, until Ginny told him.
“Just put your arm around my waist.” she said as she put her arm around his waist. Harry was very hesitant and Ginny noticed. “Just do it. You’re not going to hurt me.” Harry awkwardly put his arm around her waist but he soon relaxed when he realized how good it felt.
~*~
Ginny stepped up to the starting line with Harry and they both got ready with the other couples. Ginny noticed that Lavender and Dean were racing and began thinking to herself: How in the world was Dean supposed to race with his pants down to his knees?
“On your marks…”
Ginny and Harry got ready.
“Get set…”
They were prepared.
“Go!”
And they were off. They were at a very good start as well. They were in second place behind Neville and Luna. But they soon caught up. Ginny was having a great time and was praying that Harry was having a good time too. They actually managed to reach the finish line first and won.
They passed by the barbeque and were surprised to find Ron at the grill.
“Hey! Hey you guys! Look! I’m doing it! I’m making stuff!” said Ron proudly smiling from ear to ear.
“Wow, he can’t even cook with magic.” said Ginny as they walked past him.
“Hey, let’s go for a walk.” suggested Harry. Ginny agreed and took his hand. Harry began to look very nervous as she squeezed his hand and smiled at him. They began to walk by the edge of the lake in silence. Then Ginny began to talk.
“I’ve had a really great time today. It’s already 6:00! Can you believe that!”
“Well, time flies when you’re having fun.” said Harry smiling. Ginny could hardly keep it in anymore. She needed to tell him. She liked him so much she thought she would burst soon.
“Listen Harry, I-”
“Hurry up everyone!” Hermione shouted. “We’re going to announce the best dressed couple!” Ginny stopped what she was saying and they decided to go see who would win.
“And the winner is…” said Hermione opening the envelope, “Dean Thomas and Lavender Brown.” Dean and Lavender got up with their matching jerseys and their belts which had their names on them. They each received a blue ribbon that said “Best Dressed” on them.
Hermione came down to Harry and Ginny. “So, are you guys having a good time?”
“Oh yeah. The best.” replied Harry.
“See? I told you you’d like it. Well, the night is still young. I don’t think you two have had a BBQ picnic yet, have you?” she winked at the both of them.
“Um…no.” said Harry.
“That’s a good idea Hermione! Let’s go Harry.” Ginny saw this as the perfect time. She wasn’t going to let him get away this time.
~*~
Harry and Ginny found a nice spot by the lake for their picnic. Harry had gotten a couple of hot dogs and Ginny opened the basket that was already there. There were lots of other couples around having picnics as well. Harry could over hear their conversations.
“I love you cuddle muffin-”
“What is this? Can I eat this?”
“Futon, fondue, what’s the difference?”
He shifted his body to a cross-legged position and popped a grape into his mouth. The sun was coming down in the distance and its reflection was shimmering over the lake. Harry couldn’t help but think that this was an incredibly romantic setting. Somewhere he could hear music playing. At first he thought it was in his head but then he realized that there was an entire stereo system linked in the trees.
“The music is nice, huh?” said Ginny slowly. She was looking right into his eyes. Harry nodded. He tried looking into her eyes for a moment but his attention was caught by her lips instead. He licked his own lips and his eyes flickered back to her general face area. She was smiling slightly.
“You know, I’m really glad that you didn’t come dressed here as some kind of muggle freak.” said Harry laughing a little.
“Yeah, and I’m glad you didn’t show up in tight leather pants.” she said grinning.
“I’d sure like to see Malfoy in that outfit, wouldn’t you?” he said slyly. Ginny blushed for the second time that day.
“Yes Harry. I would very much. It’s not my fault Malfoy’s got a tight butt.”
“Disgusting.” said Harry with narrowed eyes. They both started cracking up and without realizing it, Harry’s face was just centimetres from hers. Their noses were almost touching. Harry wanted to kiss her so badly so what was stopping him? He looked into her eyes. He could tell that she wanted it. She wanted him to kiss her. He was breathing heavily now.
“Just kiss me Harry.”
Harry blinked at what she had just said. Did she just tell him to kiss her? He stared at her like she had lobsters crawling out her ears.
“I’m sorry, what?”
She leaned into his ear and whispered into it. “Just do it. You’re not doing to hurt me.”
Harry touched her red hair softly and caressed her cheek with his thumb. “Is this what you want?” he asked. The sun was slowly disappearing behind her head.
“More than you know.”
He leaned into her and kissed her lips gently. She was the one who deepened the kiss and his hands found her waist. She put her arms around his neck and the sun completely disappeared behind the lake. The breeze flew through Ginny’s hair and they ended the kiss. Harry smiled at her.
“Remind me to thank Hermione for this.” he said. Ginny didn’t say anything. She carefully took the glasses off of his face and kissed him again.
~*~
“I am the pie eating champion!” shouted Ron as he stepped into the common room that night at around 9:00. “Not even Goyle could beat me! And you’ve all seen Goyle!”
“That’s nice Ron.” said Hermione rolling her eyes.
“I must have eaten like 30 pies!” said Ron as he collapsed on the couch. Ginny and Harry were on the came couch holding hands.
“He really ate all of that?!” said Ginny.
“Yes, he did. I had to watch the whole thing.” said Hermione, “Though, I did have a very nice view of a certain picnic by the lake from the contest.”
Ginny and Harry gave identical blushes and Ginny rested her head on Harry’s shoulder.
“So, Potter,” said Ron sleepily from the other side of the couch, “You made the moves on my little sister? I aughtta slap you. But I won’t because it’s about time. But maybe I will because it took so bloody long!” Ron tried to get up to possibly hit Harry but was too tired and gave up.
Harry looked at Ginny and somehow he knew that he wouldn’t be lonely anymore and that he wouldn’t have to worry anymore. Now that he had Ginny something had changed. Like one of the empty parts inside of him had been filled all of a sudden. He really liked this feeling. And she was right about the kiss. It really didn’t hurt.
