Harry walked out of the Great Hall and towards the lake and the tree where, so long ago, he had once gone with Ginny. A small smile creeping along his lips as he remembered holding her. They had never had a chance to talk about a future together, but now that it was a possibility, he could hardly believe he could be with her, without fearing what might happen to her.
Suddenly he was overcome with sadness. Here he was thinking about a life with Ginny when she may not want to be with him. After all, it was because of him that Fred was gone. He was responsible for the death of her beloved brother, not to mention Remus and Tonks and many others.
Behind him a twig snapped, turning, wand at the ready, Harry sees George Weasley walking toward him. Harry smiled sadly at him. “George…” was all Harry was able to get out before being caught up in a hug from George, tears streaming down both of their faces.
“Harry, glad I found you, mate.” Harry opened his mouth but George stopped him. “Before you say anything, I have a message from Fred. No, I haven’t gone mental or anything, we discussed this a few weeks ago.” George paused, took a deep, shaky breath and continued, “When we were sure the ending battle could be at anytime, we made a pact with each other. If one fell, the other would find you to let you know that nothing would make us happier than to see you back with Ginny. If both of us had fallen, a letter stating our wishes would have been delivered to you from Gringotts.
“Don’t let Fred’s death be for nothing. Ginny loves you more than life itself. Hold on to her and never let her go. She’s loved you for so long. We know it broke both your hearts to let go for a while, but the danger is over. I may have lost a brother tonight, but I hope I will be gaining another sometime soon. I fully expect to be setting off some of the best fireworks Fred and I have ever made at your wedding.” George gave Harry a happy but brief smile, clapped him on the shoulder and walked back towards the castle.
Harry sat down and smiled. He loved the Weasley family; they had shown him what family was really all about. Even in the darkest moments of the family’s lives, they reached out to him and let him know he was still loved. Lost in thought he didn’t hear the soft footsteps coming up behind him.
“Harry?” Her voice sounded like home. He turned and there she was, tears shining in her eyes. He held out his arms and she ran to him. He held her for ages as she cried. Finally she looked up at him, eyes red and swollen. “I just have one thing to say to you,” she said. “Don’t you ever, ever die on me again, Harry James Potter!” With that she smacked his arm and turned to walk away.
“Gin, hey! Wait!” Harry started after her, she turned back to him wrapped her arms around his waist, looking up she became lost in his green eyes. Slowly, he lowered his head and brushed his lips against hers, then the tip of her nose, her forehead and the top of her head. She laid her head on his chest, his chin rested on her head, both sighed, relieved just to be close.
“I mean it Harry, don’t you ever scare me like that again!”
“Ginny, I have no plans to die any time soon. In fact, my only plan is to keep doing what I am going to be doing in a moment, for a long, long time.” He lifted her chin with a finger and slowly kissed her again, soft and tender, with a promise of more passion.
Neither was sure how long they had stood there holding each other, kissing every now and then. Ron came over to them, “Oi! Gin and Harry take a breather.” Ginny looked ready to hex Ron into next month.
“Ginny, Mum’s looking for you. Harry, the Order and Kingsely want a quick briefing.”
Harry nodded and took Ginny’s hand and walked with her up to the castle. They looked sadly at each other, as if this parting would be harder than any other.
As they entered through the main doors Molly grabbed Harry and hugged him tighter than she had ever before.
“I thought I had lost you Harry, losing one son tonight was hard enough. I couldn’t bear to lose another!”
Tears flowed from her eyes as she looked at him. He had always been a son to her and she could not think of him any other way.
“I’m ok, Mum. I am so sorry about Fred. I will miss him so much.”
Molly smiled at him “Thank you Harry.” Harry had never called her mum before and it brought fresh tears to her eyes.
Harry let Ginny go with her mother and he went off to meet with the Order and Kingsely. There was not much to talk about besides letting them know the part Narcissa played in helping him. The rest they had seen for themselves. So many were gone, so much lost, and yet so much gained.
Harry was exhausted, as he headed up to the Gryffindor tower. Harry gave the password to the Fat Lady and walked into the common room. There curled up on the couch, was his Ginny.
The light glow from the fireplace cast soft shadows on her face, making Harry gasp. She was the most beautiful girl, no, woman he’d ever seen. Harry walked over to her, and lightly touched her shoulder to wake her. She slowly opened her eyes and jumped up.
“You’re back! I thought they would keep you there forever.”
Harry laughed, “Gin, it’s only been a few hours.”
“I know,” she said, biting her lower lip. (Merlin, how that drove him mad!), “I just missed you terribly, and I was half afraid it had all been a dream… that I would wake up and you would still be gone.”
A single tear fell down her cheek. Harry sat next to her and pulled her onto his lap, holding her while she cried. After a while he moved to lay down, pulling Ginny with him. Laying there, wrapped in each others arms as the fire died down, their eyes grew heavy, and soon both were asleep.
Early the next day, Molly and Arthur came through the portrait, Molly gasped in surprise to see Harry and Ginny sleeping on the couch. Arthur held her hand and shook his head
“No, Molly, let them sleep.”
With a flick of his wand he enlarged the seat of the couch. With another flick, a blanket covered them. A gentle smile touched Molly’s face. She hadn’t noticed before that both Harry and Ginny were smiling in their sleep, both looking more relaxed and innocent then she’d seen them look in a long, long time.
Hours later, Harry opened his eyes to the sight of Bill, Charlie, Percy, George and Ron standing around the couch, wands pointed at him.
“So you think just because you defeated the Dark Lord you are entitled to have your way with our sister?” Bill asked behind clenched teeth.
For a few seconds, Harry was totally confused. Then George started laughing. “Oh Bill, I’m sorry, but the look on his face was just too funny.” Suddenly, all the brothers broke down.
Harry laughed nervously, as he wasn’t quite sure what was going on, until he felt the body next to him stir, looking down he saw Ginny and realized they must have fallen asleep on the couch last night.
Harry took a deep breath, “Not funny! Facing Tom was a lot less frightening than waking up to you lot with your wands pointed at me.”
“Gin, wake up. I think we’re in a ton of trouble.” Her brothers caught on quickly and raised their wands again. Ginny opened her eyes and before any of her brothers could say a word, three of them were fighting off her famous Bat-bogey hex.
Harry started laughing so hard he fell off the couch, which made Ginny start laughing so she couldn’t remove the hex from her brothers. Arthur and Molly walked in and started laughing. The sight of their three oldest sons fighting bat bogies made things seem normal for a little while.
When Ginny finally removed the hex from her brothers they all sat around the common room in a comfortable silence. As much as Harry wanted to stay there on that couch with Ginny in his arms, he decided she might enjoy it more after he’d showered. Excusing himself, he walked stiffly up to his old dorm. At some point during the night Kreacher had brought him some clean clothes and left them on one of the bed. Once he was showered and dressed he went back down to the common room.
The only person there was Ginny. She apparently had showered too. She stood with her back too him, looking out at the grounds. Harry walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist. Turning in his arms, she wrapped her arms around his waist. It was the only place either of them wanted to be.
