Disclaimer :: J.K. Rowling owns the usual. Song lyrics are by 3 Doors Down. I’ve integrated it here and there in the fic. I was listening to this song, and it just seemed to spark a plot bunny. It’s my first song fic, so please tell me what you think. Read and Review!

I’m Here Without You
by
BriannaH

A hundred days have me older
Since the last time that I saw your pretty face
A thousand laughs have made me colder
And I don’t think I can look at this the same
And all these miles that separate
And disappear now when I’m dreaming of your face

Harry, laying on his side on his bed, stared blankly ahead at the inside of the tent he was now in. Yes, it was one of the magic tents like he had stayed in at the Quidditch World Cup, but a tent none the less.

It was nights like this that Harry thought. Of course, he was always thinking, but these were the times that he was so tired, yet he could still think... about the things he shoved away. The times he thought of her, and what it would be like if she were here with him. Would she be safer? Would she be able to help? Would she just be in the way? Would she be a distraction? Would she be used against him? Would she be held captive? Would she kiss him every night before they went to bed?

Harry was constantly arguing with himself. He was never sure if he had made the right decision by leaving her behind. Since he had been training, Harry had tried to wear himself out, so that he wouldn’t be awake to think of these things. He hated the time before he fell asleep, the actual state of sleep, and the time that he woke up from the night’s dreams and entered the real world.

Harry hated the time before he slept, because it made him think. It made him think about thoughts he would push out of his mind for a later time. They always seemed to reappear when he was trying to slip into sleep.

Harry hated the actual state of sleep, because he dreamed of her. He had dreams that Voldemort was torturing her, using her to hurt Harry. On the rare occasion that he didn’t have a nightmare, he had pleasant dreams of her. The things that happened in these dreams was exactly what Harry was fighting for. He was fighting for peace, happiness, those sorts of things.

Harry hated the time that he woke up from the night’s dreams and entered the real world. If it was the day following the night that he had a nightmare, Harry would awake scared that the nightmare’s events had really occurred or that they would in the near future. If it was the day following the night he had a dream, Harry would awake upset that she wasn’t there. She wasn’t anywhere near, and there was no way that she could be.

The trio had attended Bill and Fleur’s wedding exactly one hundred days ago. Ginny was marvelous, marvelous at pretending everything was okay. She smiled with the rest, and pretended that there wasn’t a humongous war going on, and that her best friends were going to fight it... without her.

Harry wondered if she had pretended for him. Did she want to make him think that she was alright, that she wasn’t suffering? He knew she was, she just didn’t admit it to anyone. No, he wasn’t trying to fool himself into thinking that he still held her heart, he had seen it. She had let her guard down for only a moment’s time. She hadn’t meant to, but it had happened. Harry saw the grief that she normally hid from everyone behind her chocolate brown eyes about an hour into the reception. Her smile had faltered when she looked into his eyes, and he saw that she was scared. He saw that she didn’t know what to do, but her fake smile quickly came back, and all the false cheer was returned.

They shared polite conversation, but didn’t dance. They knew that they couldn’t do that without wanting more. They avoided each other for the other’s good. Of course the talking left Harry wanting more, wanting to know how she really was, to tell her that she meant everything and so much more to him.

Harry had been through so much training, which had made him extremely stronger. He had seen more die for simple reasons such as attending Dumbledore’s funeral. Ron and Hermione had tried to cheer him up countless times, but he just ended up staying his room even more than before.

Harry closed his eyes, trying to rid his mind of thought. He instantly saw her familiar face beaming back at him. She waved at him occasionally. It was the same picture as was in the worn photograph he kept in his back pocket. He kept it there to remember what he was fighting for. He wasn’t doing this for the wizarding world, well maybe a little bit for the wizarding world, but most of it was for Ginny. He did it for Ginny, so she could have the life she always wanted, the wedding she always wanted, the house she always wanted, the husband she always wanted.

I’m here without you baby
And you’re still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby
And I dream about you all the time
I’m here without you baby
And you’re still with me in my dreams
And tonight, it’s only you and me

Every time Harry closed his eyes, he saw her face. Every time he thought of other things besides the war, he thought of her. He recalled memories they had shared, sitting by the lake, and such. He remembered her laughing, giggling softly as they broke off from a particularly long kiss.

It was times like this, when he was awake late at night, that Harry wished he had brought Ginny with him. He knew he would be a great deal happier, but he might worry more.

Harry slowly drifted to sleep, and his dreams began.

Harry felt his heart flutter, it did every time he saw her pretty face. He was always the most comfortable around her.

She gave a small wave before she ran at him. She jumped on him, wrapping her legs around his waist. She giggled softly before she leant in and kissed his lips. She slowly pulled away. It wasn’t a long kiss, short and sweet.

Harry, smiling, put her down, and walked over to the couch and sat down. Ginny sat upon his lap, facing him. She began playing with the hair on the nape of his neck. He leaned forward to where his mouth was even with her right ear, “I love you, Gin.”

A smile warmed her face, “I love you, Harry.”

“Dance with me?” he asked.

She looked at him curiously, but then nodded her head.

She helped him up off of the couch. He put his arms around her waist, and she laced hers around his neck. Though they had no music, the pair danced around the living room. When both of them decided not to dance, they pulled apart.

Harry slowly opened his eyes, happy for the first time in a long time. Slowly, his senses came back to him, and he realized that what he had dreamed never happened, and she wasn’t here with him, and he wasn’t there with her.

And these miles just keep on rolling
As the people leave their way to say hello
I heard this life is overrated
But I hope that it gets better as we go

Harry heard a dull thunk on his door. He assumed it was supposed to be a knock, but he didn’t say anything.

The thunk repeated, but Harry ignored it once again. His door slowly opened, and Hermione Granger entered his room.

“Harry?”

Harry kept his eyes closed, feigning sleep.

“Harry, I know you’re awake.”

Harry kept his eyes closed, maybe she was bluffing.

“Harry James Potter! Stop faking!”

Harry opened his eyes, and quickly rolled them. “What?” he asked, clearly irritated.

“Ron’s made breakfast. Would you like to come to the table and eat some?”

“No, thanks.”

“Harry you need to eat.”

“I will, just not now.”

Her eyes quickly flicked to his night stand where a stack of letters addressed to Ginevra Weasley lay. “You should send those.”

“Hermione, would you please leave?”

Hermione shook her head softly, as if she had given up hope on him. She slowly turned and exited Harry’s room.

Harry had heard that being a hero was overrated. Yes, everyone was thankful for you, but no one would leave you alone. He knew that by the end of this war, he would have seen enough to drive any person mad. Harry knew that he couldn’t, go mad that is. He had to remain sane for her, and that’s a promise he made to himself.

He hoped that everything would get better. He hoped that the witches and wizards would leave him alone once the war was over, leave him alone to live his own life.

Everything I know, and anywhere I go
It gets hard, but it won’t take away my love

Harry knew he could never stop... loving her? Was it love? As Harry lay in bed at night, he finally decided that it was love. If it wasn’t, he wouldn’t always think about her, would he? He didn’t think that there was anything that could make him stop loving her, stop wanting a future for her, stop wanting to make her happy.

And when the last one falls
When it’s all said and done
It gets hard, but it won’t take away my love

The war was finally over. It had ended just minutes before, and Harry, worn out from exhaustion, was laying face first on the ground. It was there that Harry was found, passed out.

When Harry awoke, the first thing he saw was Hermione sitting beside him. He looked down to see he was on a hospital bed. “How long?” he asked, his voice rough.

“Ron found you thirty minutes ago. He brought you back, you’ve been out since then. We don’t know how long you were in the forest before Ron found you.”

“Is she coming?”

“She should be here soon. Ron’s gone to get her and his mum and dad.”

Harry nodded silently. “Is everyone okay?”

“Some are gone, but Ron and I managed a few scrapes, nothing bad. He’s gone Harry, you’ve done it!”

Harry forced a smile. He returned to his thoughts. He had finished him off. He could no longer cause fear in the lives of so many wizarding families. People could live in peace. Harry couldn’t wait to see her, he hadn’t seen her in so long. He just wanted to see her face, though he still had her picture planted firmly in his mind.

I’m here without you baby
But you’re still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby
And I dream about you all the time
I’m here without you baby
But you’re still with me in my drams
And tonight girl, it’s only you and me

Harry felt his eyes slowly close until he slipped into sleep.

Harry stood directly in front of her beaming face. She was wearing a simple white gown and she had a flower wreath in her hair.

“Till death do you part?” an unrecognizable voice said.

“I do,” came Ginny’s soft reply.

“You may kiss the bride,” the unknown voice replied.

Harry grinned, and leaned in. His and Ginny’s lips meant for a brief moment before pulling apart. They grasped each other’s hand and walked down the aisle of people. There wasn’t many people, only Mr. and Mrs. Weasley, the twins, Bill and Fleur, Ron and Hermione, Charlie, Tonks and Lupin, Neville and Luna, and Hagrid. That was the way Harry had always pictured it, though. Ginny had said she always wanted a small wedding.

Harry slowly opened his eyes to see Ginny, tears running down her face, holding his right hand. When she saw his eyes open, a watery smile lit her face.

“Ginny...” Harry began.

She put her finger to his mouth, “The healers say you shouldn’t talk.”

He shook his head. “I love you,” he said roughly.

Her smile widened, “I love you, too.”

Author’s Note :: Yes, another fic inspired by a song. Nearly all my fics are inspired by a song, but the song has been only directly mentioned in two so far. Yes, I did change one word in the song, but that’s because that’s how I though it was until I looked up the lyrics. I don’t really like this now that I’ve re-read it. It seemed a lot better when I was writing it, but now when I read it, I find it’s one of my least favorites of my fanfics... oh well. Perhaps someone will like it. I’ve been writing a few one shots lately, because I’ve had horrible writer’s block for “Catch Me When I Fall.” Please tell me what you think, because I’ve never done a song fic. I would love to hear some advice, for that’s the only way one can expand on their writing skills.
