Reviews For Saving Harry

A surprise ???? OH GOODY (claping her hands) you know how I LOVE surprises...lol,
see, no matter how 'old' we get we can all revert back to 10...;-D

Author's Response: Hey B, Let me amend that to a shocking surprise. And you're right, we're never to old for surprises. Let me what you thought of it. -- Jim

reading the section about Harry looking at the photo albums was ...so many things. Harry finally feeling like he belong somewhere and to someone or someones was so touching then the cold hard truth rears it's ugly head, they're still dead....through your writing we could feel the instant and deep connection he felt with them .
Percy, being kind neh, brotherly???? Good thing I was sitting down..
I love the pond, I can see it clearly and hear the water, smell the scents of the plants and trees surrounding it, from your descriptions.
As Lupin was showing Harry the memories I couldn't help but think " The ones that love us never really leave us.." and that death cannot seperate us, only lack of love and thier is no lack of that here.
Thank you for another wonderfully written chapter.
I am a little scared about what is going to happen to Harry when all the kids are at Hogwarts but I'm guessing his new 'brothers' are so going to have his back, even Percy.

Author's Response: You're right, B. The albums represent something very special to Harry and also very painful. I wanted to do something different with Percy and thought emphasizing his shared family traits over his obvious differences would be fun. Guess I should have put a warning in the AN!

The pond is etched in my brain. It's such a wonderful place to escape, and it is something shared by Harry and Ginny. They will return there. The memories really affected Harry, because the figures were three dimensional and he could hear them speaking. Thank you for such wonderful comments. You do have a surprise waiting for you . . . before they get to Hogwarts. -- Jim

I've started this story several times, but never gotten past the first few chapters. I'm really glad that I did so this time, because I've spent the day reading, and your story is good.

It does, however irk me that Harry hasn't been invited to call Mr and Mrs Weasley Arthur and Molly. It seems the sort of thing they would do for an almost adoptive son.

Can't wait to finish this story and see if you've got anything else I could read.

Author's Response: The start of Saving Harry was tough for me, too. I actually wrote the middle of the story first, before I could approach the topics raised in the first chapters. Thanks for taking the time to review. It's always fun to get comments well after the story was finished.

Ok it is theory time bare with me... I don't like soul bonds for many reasons but mainly because whole talking and sharing one mind over any amount of time and space you used it as a joke but to me it made me rethink if you have done a soul bond well that and it hurts in my stomach heart and gives me a headache so after thinking did you do a soul bond with Harry and Ginny or not I have come to the conclusion that you did main difference is yours isn't this godly like bond (so far) I think you have done a soul bond but on a very limited level they unconsciously need to touch each other. I mean they are always holding hands and you slip in the they started without even noticing They are always together like best friends (and they say become friends first.) And to me the clincher is the calming effect just by touch that Ginny is able to do and to some extent Harry (although not that much) I think I am correct in assuming you have done a soul bond I really don't like them mainly because people usually make it this god like powers start coming through it so far you really haven't done much other than maybe people just in love and that is all that it could be but I do think that you have done a revised soul bond on them.... THOUGH I am probably wrong that is what I think.

To the story really like Percy being more of a Weasley in this story in Cannon he is just way to easy to hate and this is the first time I have seen someone try to show Percy in a good light and I love that you did that. And in you AN when you said AU for reason and listed the Fred and George thing. I was just waiting for them to give the map to Harry. Do love the comment of it being a boring story and doesn't matter on how they got it that made me laugh.

Question for you I have never heard the Bellatrix story on her name it being a star and all that so I am wondering... Is that true? If so I am going to be quite sad with myself since I never heard that in my life.

Author's Response: Hi Tad, If you've read any of my previous responses to your reviews, you know by now I don't consider G and H's relationship a soul bond. In fan fic, that translates into what you call god-like powers. They have none of those. What they do have would be described in non-fan fic terms as a connection, made for each other, or soul mates.

One of the things I've done in the story was to exchange secondary qualities for primary qualities, with several of the characters. Percy is one. So, I've brought to the front the more family-oriented qualites and tried to make him a nicer guy. Fred and George aren't going to give up their secrets, are they?
br>My understanding is that each of the Black offspring: Sirius, Regulus, Andromeda, Narcissa, and Bellatrix are all stars, which is just one of the many games JKR played with names. Thanks for your review and thoughts, Jim

the ending was good! i love the banter between fred and george, i hope we get more of that! we don't see much of ron, does he and harry get closer? i hope so, and will they meet hermione on the train?
i love how mcgonagal can ghange from being nice to stern, and i think it shows that everyone can have two sides to them, which you have shown with harry. and noticing he is stuttering less and saying more than he used too, very subtle.
i like that the twins gave him the map, very sweet!

Author's Response: You definitely will get more banter between F and G! Now, Charlz, I can't tell you what's going to happen! :-)

McG probably has the most obvious division between "personal" side and her "professorial" personality. I wanted to bring out more of the former, because I felt there was a really nice person under that stern exterior. Harry's stuttering is an indication of how comfortable he is. Once they heard Harry's dad helped create the map, the twins knew they had to give it to him. Good guys! Thanks for this review. -- Jim

By "tools" I meant his dad's invisibility cloak, wandless magic, shield charms, teh Marauder's Map, already knowing how to fly, already having the photo albums with his parents pictures - so many things that he received in first, second, third year. There's a reason you're compressing all this experience into just four weeks, isn't there? It feels to me as if you're compressing Harry's seven years at Hogwarts (in canon - well 7 years plus one year on the run looking for Horcruxes) into a year or two, and I'm curious about why you're doing that, where you're going with it. Inquiring minds (mine, at least!) want to know! LOL!

Abraxan

Author's Response: I see what you mean now. Most of those "tools" mentioned were first year it seems. The Invisibility Cloak (Christmas), flying (first lesson during the first week) and the pictures (end of the year). Magical children do wandless magic (accidental magic), so that's actually pre-Hogwarts. Lastly, the Map was moved up to symbolize Harry's growing comfort at Hogwarts as he moved from checking it all the time to not at all (and leading to Draco's attack). Along with moving Remus to first year DADA prof, all of these were done to define the plot and give the story the structure I wanted. I needed them in place early, because the story ends early in Harry's first year. Rest assured, if I had plans to do all seven years, there would still be plenty of canon events to play off of. Hope that satisfies your inquiring mind! :-) Jim

Reviewer: Abraxan Signed Date: 2008.08.26 - 01:13PM Title: Ponds, Pensieves, and Power

Why does Ginny picking out Harry's wardrobe elicit the "welcome to the family" comment from Arthur and Molly? I can see why it would make the twins hoot and whistle, the rascals!

You're giving Harry all the "tools" it took him years to acquire in canon, and all before he even goes to school. He's had a very intense four weeks, with several lifetimes worth of experience in them. So I'm thinking you must be planning on him killing Voldie as an ickle Firstie, with all this power and preparation already in place before he even starts school.

It will be interesting to see where you're going with this.

Abraxan

Author's Response: Hi Lynda, Ginny's shopping spree for Harry was just one of many instances where Harry put his trust in or opened up to the family. Hence, A and M's welcome. It's a homecoming for them, too, because they wanted Albus to place the 15 month old Harry with them.

I don't think Dumbledore gave Harry any tools in canon. Instead, he received the same education any other student at Hogwarts received. What Harry has in this story is a large reservoir of magic (from his parents' genes), a great deal of anger, and McG working with him. It's a nice start, but he has many, many more tools to develop.

This is just a portion of his first year, so no killing of Voldie. After all, I may want to pick it again at some future date. :-) Thanks, Jim

AWWW!!! Okay, again I loved this chapter is was, as always, pretty amazing. The beginning, with the albums and then the flying, so cute and fluffy and I LOVED it. Next when Ginny was all mad and everything I can totally understand her frustration and it wasn't hard to figure out why she was mad. I've had two older brothers myself go off to school and leave me all alone and yeah, it pretty much sucks. Of course, mine came home every day but now that I look back on it...that sort of sucked too. -_^ Anyways, I LOVED the Remus/Harry interaction and it was amazing. Of course, I do know why the story of Sirius wasn't brought up and let me tell you, reading Harry's reaction to THAT little tid-bit of information is going to be...interesting to say the least. And then of course the end, while I am curious about that meeting that Harry has I loved the whole "welcome to the family" thing and it was just great! Well, again I'm off to the next chapter, toodles Jim!

~Kat

Author's Response: Hi Kat, Well, aren't you making my weekend enjoyable? In case there's any doubt, yes, you are! So, thank you.

First time for Ginny to be left totally alone, and made all the worse because she and Harry have become so close. The flying, though, is the purest evocation of their relationship. Sirius is a subject that most people do not want to bring up. It would be yet another DD decision that created the ten years for Harry at the Dursleys'. Wouldn't want to be anywhere near the boy when (and if) he finds out. The "welcome" really got to Harry, simply because this is the first time he has seen what family really is. Talk soon, Jim

I love it!!! So sweet, no wonder you couldn't stop writing, this is great stuff! It probably would've been too long for just one chapter though. Also, there needed to be a tissue warning in the beginning, as I was not only a little off after reading the end of the last one, but then the photo album? I wasn't expecting to be emotional again so soon! Oh well, great work, now I get to read some more!

Author's Response: Thanks, Lauren! All of a sudden the chapters became super-size on me, but I couldn't find anything I wanted to cut. Did you guess about the album? - Jim

Jim,

Great chapter. I especially enjoyed watching as Harry came to the realization that he truly is part of the Weasley family. Well done.

Seeker Sis

Author's Response: It's been a process. The hardest part was to have it evolve, when all I wanted was for Harry to be buddies early on. Thanks for your comments! -- Jim/The Seeker

Reviewer: MyGinevra Signed Date: 2008.05.13 - 03:27PM Title: Ponds, Pensieves, and Power

Well, Jim, each time I write a review I say you have outdone yourself. So, not to outdo myself, I once again say, you have outdone yourself. Bravo! And you maintained that top quality of writing, plot, characters, dialogue, etc., over a much longer chapter than before. You maintained the same pace of excellence even thought this chapter is much longer than the others.

Once again, the high points were the scenes with Harry and Ginny. Their innocent intimacy with a subtle hint of a maturer relationship lurking just under the surface is perfect and moving. The ups and downs -- Ginny's snit over being left behind and Harry's instinctive ability to smooth things over are all wonderful. There seems to be a golden halo over their heads.

The other great scene was the gift of the Marauders Map. I think you have nailed the twins' characters, and in fact provided a true reason for their giving the map to Harry, a not-very-well explained act in canon. The scene with the pensieve was also very moving; Remus's emotional strain at having to meet Harry after so many years came through quite poignantly. The "business" that he had to attend to must have been caused by the full moon.

Now it's on to the next chapter. Well done!

Peter

Author's Response: Hi Peter, I really don't mind repetition when it is the kind of compliments you wrote! As you know, when 19 and 20 were combined, they seemed like the neverending chapter. I'm glad you think I maintained the focus throughout.

Harry and Ginny have something special, don't they? It's fun to see how they respond to the other, especially since they still retain their innocence and purity.

The twins already knew that Harry's past was essentially a blank book. So, when they heard Harry's dad was one of the Marauders who created the Map, they knew what they had to do. Despite their jokester facades, I've always thought Fred and George were quite intelligent and very good guys. It's fun exploring that side of them. Thanks for picking up on the reference to Remus' monthly problem, since the time of the lunar month was conveyed through H and G and their flying.

Thanks for another much appreciated review. I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts about Ch 20. -- Jim

When I discovered how long this chapter was I decided to take notes for I was sure I'd not remember half of what I wanted to talk about in this review. ;-)

It was so funny to see Harry's reaction to Molly getting him up at the "crack of dawn", after only five hours' sleep. Harry's reaction reminded me so much of how my own son gets up for school each morning. I suppose boys of all ages react the same to rude awakenings.

I'll give the beginning of this chapter a four on the Tissue Index for sentimentality. You've done a brilliant job wringing every possible emotion out of the Weasleys' gift of the photo albums. The fact that such a gift would effect Harry like that went straight to my fluffy spot; I'm so glad he wanted Ginny and her parents with him when he viewed the photos for the first time. However, I did feel quite sad when Harry realized that the photos would make his parents a reality and that they'd still be dead. Still, I'm really glad that seeing himself in his parents and in his parents' arms gave him a sense of really belonging to a family and not just joining one. Also, his physical reaction came so naturally and it's proof that he's learned to overcome some of his more powerful emotions with Ginny's help as she sits next to him. The part that brought about the third tissue was Harry's statement that he thought his parents would have picked the Weasleys for his surrogate family.

The next thing I really liked about the chapter was Percy's willingness to play big brother to Harry. It was really touching how they both ended up helping the other and I wonder whether Percy would eventually say the things he allegedly said in OotP about Harry if he'd had this opportunity to interact with him like this.

I will attribute the fourth tissue to Harry figuring out what was bothering Ginny and how he helped her get over her sadness. The fact that he regards her as his best friend sent me into floods. I am so glad that Ginny had the foresight to share her special place with Harry. I think he'll need the images once he gets to Hogwarts and before he can find a special place for himself at the school. I'm glad, too, that the two have plans to help Ginny learn first year magic and have a way of staying in touch so that she doesn't feel quite so lonely with all her brothers away at school.

Finally, I had to smile because Fred and George just wring it out of you with their sharp wit and their willingness to part with the Marauder's Map. It was fun to see Harry joining in and saying they can borrow the map for a price, too.

Altogether, this is a terrific chapter that definitely gets two thumbs up, no Bat Bogies, and that huge number of Tissues! Now I'm off to read Chapter 20.

Arnel

Author's Response: Peter (MyGinevra) and I have had an ongoing discussion on what the best length for a chapter is. I do think 17,000 words is a bit much!

Prior to the photo album and pensieve memories, Harry's parents had been virtually undefined for him. Now with the gifts, Harry knows exactly what they look and sound like. While they are wonderful gifts, they make his loss all the more real. I'm really glad you think I conveyed those emotions well. It's hard to think of a better family for Harry to be with at this point, so I thought the Weasley comment was appropriate. As least now, Harry has a better feeling for his roots, something that was missing while he was with the Dursleys.

If I were to take the story through all seven years, I think we'd see a different Percy. Harry brings certain qualities and experiences that parallel how Percy feels, and I could easily see Harry connecting Percy more securely to the family. Ah, Harry and Ginny. It's fun to have two kids who really understand each other, and know instinctively what the other needs. They truly are best friends, though the time apart will test them.

What better way for the twins to show their support and acceptance of Harry than to give him the Map? With the Map, Cloak, McGonagall's training, and the support of the four Weasley brothers, Harry should be prepared for Hogwarts

Thanks for such a wonderful review. I'll send another box of tissues to you! -- Jim

Another great chapter to a great story!
A couple of comments:

1) I really hope that if Ginny does write in the diary, it isn't because Harry is ignoring her--it would really hurt their chances for a future relationship if Harry were to cause her such turmoil. I'd prefer, of course, to see the diary in someone else's hands.
2) You might want to start thinking about a natural place to break the story and write the sequel--it's getting rather long.

Author's Response: Hi Duke,

Thanks for reviewing and your comments. For the diary, there are several threads going that are quite different from canon. Harry and Ginny (and the other Weasleys) know that Voldemort's real name is Tom Marvolo Riddle, so they would know who the diary belonged to. Harry and Ginny are much closer, so I can't imagine he would ignore her or not notice a change in her personality. Ginny's still at The Burrow, so having her come across the diary would be problematical.

Second comment: the story will end fairly early in Harry's first year. The focus of the story is on the effects of the Dursleys on Harry's personality and how that impacts his entry into the wizarding world and Hogwarts. At this point, always subject to characters hijacking the story, we are about two-thirds of the way into the story.

Hope that answers you implied questions! -- Jim

Wonderful Chapter, though I'm glad you finished it where you did.

For the first half of chapter i thought i had wondered into a pensieve the interaction was so real, so lifelike.

I did enjoy the photos and the pensieve images that Harry was shown, in the short term it may indeed fill up a hole that he has but in the long term seeing images like that may just make him realise what he has never known and make that hole grow once again. But that scene is something we can all relate too, pictures of lost loved ones always makes us realise that what we once had can never be again. That is the difference between most of us and Harry (He has never known it).

Your twins language could have been lifted out of canon, i could actually imagine Jo writing like that, so well done.

Also the progress that Harry has made took another leap this chapter with the trust of Lupin from just getting the OK from the Weasleys, a small thing easily passed by but very noticeable in the character development of Harry.

Also the Harry/Percy interaction is another indicator to me why this should be a full 7 year story. The changes that Harry makes to the people around him would make a wonderful study for the full 7 years at Hogwarts, and believe me when i say you really that the talent to do that.

Just a couple of points from an Englishman who spends 1/3 of his life in the states trying (and mainly failing) to get Americans to use the Queens English properly. Over here we have Bacon not Ham and people are said to be green fingered not have a green thumb.

Finally i have never been a fan of the term wordless magic, i do find that using non-verbal as a phrase helps more (OK Ok i'll shut up about things like that)

Jut to finish i do think you have show not tell down to an art form, well done again

Paul

Author's Response: Hi Paul, Thank you for such a detailed and helpful review. I really appreciate you pointing out where I missed the correct British words and terms. I will incorporate them moving forward. Suffice it say, that it is a constant process on my part, so please continue with the corrections as needed. As for wordless, I wasn't comfortable when I wrote it, but other than 'silent" I couldn't come up with anything better. You have with non-verbal. So, no need to "shut up." Oh, do you teach Queens English here in the states?
br>I've said it before, and it continues to apply, your analysis of what I've written makes me smile (even the Brit corrections!). I'll ignore your chiding about turning this into a seven year story, but the key elements of the Harry/Percy interaction you mentioned will be seen going forward.

Lastly thanks for the show, not tell comment. It is something I try to do. It helps a lot when someone like you thinks I'm accomplishing that! Thanks for all the wonderful thoughts you've put into this review! -- Jim
