Reviews For Saving Harry

Reviewer: mamu2 Signed Date: 2010.08.23 - 04:19PM Title: Dumbledore

Dumbledore isn't very likeable here.

Question...you said in the chapter
My relatives lied about everything. My parents, magic, my scar, how they died. They said they died in a car crash! When they were drunk!
I thought the Dursleys said his parents abandoned him and Harry didn't find out they were dead until Dumbledore came to get him out of there.

Good story so far...

Author's Response: Hi mamu, I have not gone back and reread the offending sections, but I am sure you're right. What's amazing is that you are the first reader to catch this inconsistency, and there have been quite a few readers! The irony of all this is that I gave a different story to the Dursleys just to move away from canon and HP most stories. Then, I go and forget. Oh well. Good catch and thanks for reading SH and leaving this review. Almost forgot Dumbledore - he is very close to the nadir in his relationship with Harry. Suffice it to say this is not the Harry that he anticipated coming to Hogwarts.

When I visit Honeydukes in June at the Wizarding World, here in sunny Fla. I'll be sure to tell you ALL about it, I may even get you a 'real' chocoball or 2 I am dying to taste clotted cream..

Author's Response: FGG, you would make someone very happy if he were to receive some chocoballs. The three of us who don't live so close to the HP WW want tons of pix, too. Thanks, Jim

"How does she say so many words without breathing?" - thta's a girls thing....lol
I loved the candy store scene, it made me feel like I was there,

WOW what a powerful ending to this chapter. It's not lost on me how you subtling slip the physical signd of Harry's abuse, him not being able to eat a lot, the sweating in distressful situtations....it's there but not overdone, another great chapter. I also like the strong connection between Harry and Ginny, I hope it's not too traumatic for them when they have to seperate as the school year starts.

Author's Response: Hi Bev, that non-stop talking just seemed like something a young Ginny would do, especially with someone like Harry. It certainly isn't Harry's thing at this point. We had to have them stop at the candy store, so I could give a shout out to Peter's use of chocoballs in HH.

Thanks for your wonderful words about the ending. It is one of the most telling scenes in the story, and the physical signs play a significant part, since Harry's magic is so organic, so natural, and uncontrolled.

Let me assure you that a lot of things will occur to help build a bridge between Harry and Ginny, once all the boys are off to Hogwarts. Thanks for allowing me to revisit the story, since it has been a while since I've read it. -- Jim

Well you don't do things half way at all do you.... Now you have Dumbledore actually attacking Harry that really isn't going to go over well at all with Harry I am thinking. Do think that this Harry he should of came clean all up front he is connecting dots way to easy Dumbledore should of realized that and went about this in a different way I mean he was using Legilimency was he not? That is at least the vibe I got from there conversation.

Author's Response: LOL! DD and Harry are both well out of their experience and comfort zones with the other. So, they have a lot of work to do. DD did use Legilimency - big mistake.

Hi, Jim - Nope, I don't think all of Harry's anger centered on Dumbledore. A lot of it had to be aimed at the Dursleys, but Dumbledore, as the cause of him being stuck at the Dursleys, has to be the prime target for Harry's ire. And I don't see, at the moment, how you're going to redeem Dumbledore in Harry's eyes in the chapters you have left. It will be interesting to see how you've worked it out!

I get a kick out of going through my completed stories with interested/interesting reviewers too - I'm glad you're enjoying my comments! I'm enjoying yours too.

Abraxan

Author's Response: Hi Lynda, That's it. Dumbledore made a mistake placing Harry with the Dursleys and not checking up (which still startles me), but it was the Dursleys who chose to treat an innocent child so poorly. A number of factors come into play as Harry and DD move to a better understanding of each other. I do enjoy your comments, since you understand the construction behind the story. Take care, Jim

Wow! Don't make Harry angry! Wonderful portrayal of the inherent power I expected him to have that JKR didn't show!

Abraxan

Author's Response: Hi Lynda, Do you think all of Harry's anger about his life to that point centered on Dumbledore? :-)

Harry's magical power goes back to what I mentioned previously: he is the son of two highly magical parents. Like you, I was surprised Harry didn't become more powerful, but i guess JKR wanted to keep him as the common man. It sure is fun traveling through the story again with you! -- Jim

*sits here with mouth so far open that a truck could drive through it* POOR HARRY! (See...never really liked Dumbeldore.) The poor boy is so overwhelmed and I can only begin to imagine how that must feel. first he is feeling all these things that he has never felt before and encountering things that he was told were dreams and fantasies and lies and now he is meeting the man who made his life a living hell. I always did wonder why harry didn't blame Dumbeldore for everything and I love how you have adressed this. While I love the Harry Potter books -- if I didn't would I be reading this -- they do leave some very open questions and you seem to have compiled them all and made a wonderful story that I don't want to stop reading until it is done, and even then I will probably scream "GIVE ME MORE!" You are an amazing writer and I love the angle you have taken and the characters are so IN CHARACTER with the characters I have created in my own mind it is somewhat frightening. I thank you for this wonderful journey that I am taking through your literary abilities and I can not wait to continue. Well I'm off, the next chapter is simply calling my name.

Author's Response: Ditto.

Author's Response: Wow! What wonderful comments and compliments! Thank you, Kat. By taking a different approach to Harry's time with the Dursley and how it affected him, that opened up other areas to explore, such as Dumbledore's decisions. I'm glad you're enjoying this alternate version. -- Jim

May I say, thus far you have effectively caused havoc with my emotions! Poor Harry has goen through all of that...to see him stutter and struggle with something simple as a touch is heart-breaking (well written! but heart-breaking!). Nothing short of fantastic. I have but one question... in this chapter Harry mentions that his relatives lied to him about his parents...and how they were killed in a car accident while drunk. Why then, in an earlier chapter did Harry claim to have heard nothing from Petunia and Vernon regarding his parents, not even their names? Just a question, in reality, I probably just missed something!

Author's Response: Hi EDP, The lies primarily had to do with what they didn't tell Harry. Except for the lie about his parents' death, Vernon and Petunia refused to talk to Harry about his "unnaturualness."

Sorry for causing emotional havoc, but thank you for leaving a review in such a state! -- Jim

that a good end (even though it is tottaly not far!). Up date soon.

Author's Response: Hi HGP, LOL -- I had intended to go well beyond that part, but the chapter would have turned out to be much longer than I wanted. So, this was the best place to stop.

I'm working on Ch 14 now! Thanks, Jim

Reviewer: annep Signed Date: 2008.03.07 - 05:30PM Title: Dumbledore

Harry’s dream was intriguing. The auburn-haired Neptune reminded me of Dumbledore the Transfiguration teacher from Tom Riddle’s diary. Albus does fancy himself as the orchestrator of many lives. Considering how those machinations have affected Harry, it’s no wonder he views Dumbledore as a monster. (well, assuming my interpretation of his dream is correct)

I absolutely love Minerva and Arthur! They were so wonderful in their dealings with Harry this chapter. I don’t know if it was conscious, but it was very prudent for McGonagall to show her “teacher face” to Harry so he’s prepared when she treats him differently at Hogwarts (at least when other students are around).

Dumbledore not inviting McGonagall to stay in the office underscores his arrogance and cluelessness. She is going to be outraged and incensed when she comes in to find a wrecked office and stunned child—if Dumbledore has any sense (which, apparently he does not) he will run away very fast when she enters. And then he’ll have to endure Molly’s and Ginny’s wrath too! Poor, stupid man.

Author's Response: Hi annep! That's exactly where I got "Neptune's" hair! And he does direct a lot of action in that dream. Dumbledore definitely is on Harry's list at this point.

Thankfully, he has Minerva and Arthur (and Ginny). You've pointed out an important lesson. Harry is seeing Minerva well outside her usual environment and range of expression. So, it is important that he learn which is when.

I see DD operating pretty much on his own, because the wizarding world has deferred to him for so long. I don't think it would ever cross his mind to have McG attend, even though he knew Harry has established some rapport with her. The next chapter will address some of these issues.

Could you imagine facing the irrate trio of Molly, McG, and Ginny? No thanks!

Thanks for your insightful comments! -- Jim

Dumbledore sure doesn't come over well from Harry's PoV, does he? It will be interesting to see if and how he changes. Right now, he seems to be doing everything precisely wrong, in sharp contrast to McGonagall's efforts to do everything right.

Harry's dream was interesting... where he got the imagery is one thing, and what it means is another. There were some very interpretive combinations of elements in that dream.

Of all of this, it was Harry's meeting Rosmerta that was the saddest to me. He's been so secluded that he has no idea what a normal reaction is, and lacking that knowledge, he expects to be punished for it. That's a keen comment both on Harry and on society in general, I think.

Why do I think that Dumbledore is going to regret his attempt to Stun Harry? Shouldn't he know by now that that never turns out well? =)

Author's Response: Hi Dave, You are extremely perceptive, as usual. Harry's experience is so limited he is unable to see many alternatives. As he interacts with more people -- and right now that's McG and the Weasleys -- Harry will begin to see there are different interpretations, the shades of gray we discussed previously.

Nevertheless, Dumbledore needs to understand how badly he's handled the situation and make amends, especially as to his flexible approach to the truth. McG will try to assist DD, but that is a slippery slope.

Please contact me directly if you want to discuss the dream in more detail.

Rosmerta, both physically and personality, was so far outside Harry's experience, he had no idea how to respond. His Dursley upbringing equates to getting punished for anything outside a narrow range of acceptable behavior. It definitely is sad.br>
You would think that the greatest wizard alive could have come up with a better response and spell for Harry's outburst. Safe to say actions speak louder than words here.

Thanks for your always perceptive and interesting observations. Best, Jim

This is an amazing story. You have included such crisp descriptions of Harry's life and surroundings in both the Muggle and Wizarding world. It is so nice to read original ideas. I like the tender way you have Harry connecting with a new male figure, Mr Weasley. I also like how Harry is questioning Dumbledores motives. A really nice story. I hope you post chapters frequently. There is so much that can be done with this story line.

Author's Response: Hi HPSpirit, Thanks for such nice comments! I prefer AU, so I can twist canon a bit, hopefully to make the story more interesting and surprising. Mr. Weasley is just the male figure Harry needs now, especially since Dumbledore is not currently fulfilling his responsibilites. I try to post new chapters weekly. Thanks! - Jim

Woah Woah Woah! You can't leave it there! I've been waiting so long to see what happens and you go and do that to me!?

Ok, moment's passed, on to the review.

Honestly: I liked the cliff hanger. Not happy, but it's effective. Can't wait for next chapter.

I knew this was going to happen. Ok, maybe not exactly like this, but I knew it! Brilliant chapter, Don't really know what else to say. Get chapter 14 out soon!

Author's Response: Hi Tim,

It was the best place to stop. The fact that it was a cliffie is just a bonus . . . for me!

Dumbledore's behavior was inevitable, I guess. I hope Harry's reaction was understandable. And what follows should prove interesting, as Harry, DD, McG, and the Weasleys all try to figure out where to go from here. I'm working on that now.

Thanks for reading and reviewing! Hope all is well with you. -- Jim

Wow, nice chapter. One can only hope that Dumbledore will start to see the error inherent in keeping Harry from the truth.

Author's Response: Thanks, Duke!

Dumbledore's "education" will begin in the next chapter. And Harry will have a chance to understand more of what has happened around him. -- Jim

One of my FAVORITE STORIES! :)
HOW COULD DUMBLEDORE ATTACK HARRY!? How could he be such an imbecile? Poor Harry... I honestly hope Harry finds Sammi again.

Keep writing!
BD

Author's Response: HI BD, I'm really happy to hear this is one of your favorites! We'll find out in the next chapter DD's thinking behind him cursing Harry.

Gosh, people seem to want Sammi to come back. Maybe I'll have Harry do an Accio, Sammi. How's that?

I'm working on Ch 14 but still have a ways to go on it.

Thanks for reviewing! -- Jim
