Reviews For Saving Harry

the conflict going on in Harry's mind is woderful - he keeps coming back to the fact that he doesn't want to feel this way any more and he must learn to trust if he's ever going to be able to feel 'normal'

Author's Response: Harry's seeing a more positive way of living for the first time, one which is strongly different from what he has been used to. Trusting wisely and opening up to those people are two ways for Harry to move toward a more normal life and feelings.

I don't know this Harry you have reminds me of Quirrell he stutters alot but there is another person below the surface that thought just wouldn't leave me this whole chapter with all the stuttering that Harry was doing. And me expecting to actually see him this chapter. I am thinking pretty soon Harry needs to get his anger undercontrol just thinking of Dumbledore sets him off and people will eventually start to notice. Griphook already did and thinking if just thinking of Dumbledore does this to Harry it is going to be a very interesting school year since Harry will actually have to see Dumbledore in person every day.

On another note do love seeing you respond to my posts but hope you don't feel the need to do that I comment on every chapter (or at least try to since my goal is to be Most Prolific Reviewers currently number 10.) So more than understand not having you respond though I really do enjoy hearing feed back. Usually state this right when I start a story but hadn't got a response on a comment for a long time so forgot.

Author's Response: Tad, I respond to all reviews. If someone has taken the time to leave their thoughts, then I think it's only fair that write back.

The stuttering is a reflection of his time with the Dursleys, where he was berated almost every time he spoke. There definitely is another personality below the surface. Having been thrust into an entirely new world, Harry is furious, and at this time he sees DD as the main cause. You're a speed reader! Thanks, Jim

AWWW! Now I want to cry with both children! If you keep me going on this emotional roller coaster they are gonna lock me up! ^^

~Kat

Author's Response: Kat, I can't believe you are reading one chapter after another. It is a roller coaster!

That anxiety disorder is such a sad thing...

Running to the next!

Author's Response: Harry's lack of social interaction comes to the fore here.

Such a brilliant day... crushed by a simple misunderstanding. Oddly perfect for this chapter. :) Chris

Author's Response: For the want of a few words, eh? And any of the three could have said something. This is so much fun seeing you tear through the chapters. You really are a fast reader! -- Jim

I suppose this is a review for the first ten chapters, as this is the first time I've picked up the story. Before I say anything else, I'd like to say that it is an enjoyable read and I think it'll continue to be so. But with that said, what's a review that doesn't attempt to offer something worthwhile? xD

Biggest thing I noticed from the beginning of the fic was the years from Harry being three all the way up until we get Dumbledore into the story felt somewhat slow and repetitive at points. I understand that it was necessary and that character driven stories tend to be slow, but there were a couple points during the descriptions of the Dursleys' treatment of Harry that I felt almost like I was forcing myself to read. I think it jumped out at me because the rest of the narrative was the complete opposite. With the exception of the above, it was quite easy to get lost in the story, if you will.

I have to admit, when you described Sammi I thought it was a tiny bit cruel to Harry with the physical similarity to Ginny. It wasn't too much of a stretch to realize she and Miss Rae were going to disappear on him, but it was still sad and made me wonder how he would react to Ginny beyond his rationale that caring about things gets him hurt. I suppose things have gone as well as could be expected, given the situation, though judging from the end of Chapter 10, things are still a little rocky. I wouldn't be surprised that after Ginny realizes what happened with both of them (Sammi and Miss Rae), she may ask Molly to help find them, whether the idea is plausible or not. That could possibly prove to Harry that they hadn't forgotten about him, but that it was more the Dursleys' fault, and Dumbledore's.

Speaking of Dumbledore, I think that's an interesting angle you're taking on Harry. WIthout trust in the Headmaster, some things (if you choose to go anything like canon, or even write that far) will be a lot more difficult for Harry and may inspire him to act even more rashly. Harry/Dumbledore discord isn't original, but I like how you're doing it and where it's going - I'm very interested to see how it plays out.

Poor Weasleys. Everything that they are as a family is bound to scare Harry at this point, so they have to walk on eggshells around him. That must be stressful.

Anywho, thanks for sharing and keep up the good writing. =)

Author's Response: Hi Dan, Thanks for taking the time to read all ten chapters. I appreciate you leaving the insightful and constructive comments. You have some very interesting ideas about Sammi, Dumbledore, and the Weasleys. All I can tell you at this point is that you are spot on regarding the Weasleys. What they do naturally, especially the physical part of their personalities, is exactly what Harry doesn't need. We'll see how that develops in the upcoming chapters. Thanks! -- Jim

Your story is really great.especially i like the way you detail every character and their feelings.i like the stories which evolves like LOtR, yours is one of that. thanks for entertaining us.

Author's Response: Thanks for such a great review! I'm so glad you're enjoying my exploration of the characters in this alternative setting. LOtR? You make me blush! Thanks, Jim

I think I was expecting a little more from this chapter but I have come to the conclusion that this is not a fast paced adventure, but a slower moving character piece that really explores things in great detail. I am not sure how I feel about that lol. It was long, said a lot but nothing happened. it's confusing! But it is a very intricate look at a version of how harry might have been so it is quite compelling in it's own way.

I feel sort of inadequate - this review is not at all the long thing that otehrs have written. I truly am a terrible reviewer! Anyway I do wonder what will happen next and how Harry will overcome and so forth. I did, however, miss Hagrid DREADFULLY. :(

Author's Response: Hi Kezzabear, Your conclusion is right! This definitely is not a fast paced adventure. Since it is a detailed character study, the action or movement, if you will, is mostly described in emotional or psychological terms. In that regard, a lot happened in this chapter that will have ramifications throughout the story. As for Hagrid, how do you think this Harry would react to the half-giant showing up unannounced on his doorstep? We'd certainly gets action then, with Harry setting land speed records running away from him. Thanks for leaving the review - it wasn't inadequate at all! -- Jim

Am I right in thinking that the reason Harry thought that Ginny didn't really like him was the fact that she was 'staring stonily at him' when all other times she's had a happy smile for him? And then to have her burst into tears and to run away from him so abruptly - to Harry's confused and fragile state of mind, it probably came across that Ginny hated the very sight of him!

Well, I suppose it's understandable why Ginny would react that way - after all, she probably thought that of all the Weasleys, she's the only one who can say that she's made any headway with Harry, and then she finds out that she's been left behind. Again. The only thing that would have been worse was if Harry had actually let someone else - like Ron - go along with him to Diagon Alley.

Great writing, and I look forward to reading the rest of this highly original and controversial story. I'm hoping that you don't make things too unpredictable though. Like, I don't know, make Harry get Sorted into Slytherin where his untold Dark powers (mainly due to his ill treatment at the Dursleys) will come into being, along with his Soul Bond to Ginny! Now that's an original plot bunny! ;)

Cheers.

Author's Response: Hi oeyp, it's always fun to get one of your reviews. Thanks for taking the time to leave this one. I hate to say this, but Chapter 11 will answer most of your questions -- except the house and soul bond parts. Safe to say, Harry has not had a lot of social interactions, so any strong reaction towards him will tend to overwhelm him. And having Ron go shopping would have been cruel. Where do you get those thoughts? LOL I'm not going to say anything about which house Harry gets sorted into. In fact, I'm not even going to say he attends Hogwarts in September. But I will say there is absolutely, positively no way I'd do a Soul Bond with Ginny (with Hermione maybe -- just kidding!). Cheers, Jim

The chapters of Saving Harry so far have been very interesting. I've been able to determine just why the charaters act as they do. This chapter, however, seem forced. All you other chapters had me wanting to know where it would lead in the end. However, this chapter made what would happen next all to predictable.

For some reason Ginny's chapter, that you have started to develop and tell us about, was off. I find myself woundering why she would come to the conclusion that she made, when she has thus far been thinking in Harry's shoes.

Harry's reaction was understandable. He is a loose cannon, and his emotions are a reck. However, you just might have to further explain, why he would take crying in a bad way. I could see him thinking he had done something bad to upset her and staying away from her because of that. But, I just can't understand this preticlar reaction.

The predictability of this chapter does not inexclude just the relationship with Ginny and what, so far, would happen in your CoS version, but also which house he will end up in. Because you easily showed Harry to have traits of all or at least most of the houses, the sorting could have been very interesting to find. The build up of his 'courage' was at first not obivous to me, but after this chapter it is very clear to me where he's going.

The house choice, was not the reason I was slightly dissappointed in the chapter. I may be wrong as I have not looked back at the previous chapter, but I was under the impression that Harry was going to Howgarts to talk with the Headmaster before he went shopping for his school supplies.

All of that aside, I still will continue to read this story, because dispite the predictability of the basic plot, your story is very different and interesting to read.

Author's Response: Thanks for your comments. I found your assumptions quite interesting. Thank you for sharing them.

I just wanted to drop you a line to let you know that I think this is one of the best stories I have ever read. I'm usually warry of fics where the author significantly changes one of the characters (let's be honest this is NOT the Harry from the books, but then he isn't supposed to be), but you really make me believe that this is what the character COULD have been. The way you portray Harry is superb. And let me just say that it is KILLING ME that no one can hug him or really give him comfort. Outstanding job on this story. Please update soon!!

Author's Response: Wow! Thanks for the great review! This is a completely different view of Harry, so his personality and actions will be much different than the books. I'm so pleased you like the way I'm portraying him. And don't worry, I want him to get hugged, too! -- Jim

Jim, you left me in two minds. But it's not bad as it sounds. First of all, I'm frustrated with the latest H/G development. However it was only to be expected and it is realistic, that I feel like an idiot for being frustrated.
Is it wrong that your longest chapter so far felt so short? At least to me it did. Either way, it's a compliment.
There's not really much left for me to comment on, as the previous reviewers did a wonderful job. However, the gift for Ginny is intriguing and offers many possibilities. That particular part of this chapter sent my mind in overdrive.
Great work as usual. Can't wait to see more!
Dino

Author's Response: Thanks, Dino! As much as I would like the H/G relationship to be all roses and sunshine, I didn't think that would be realistic for Harry or kids their age. Thanks for the length comment. One of the ways I judge the quality of a chapter is by how "short" it felt, so your comment is greatly appreciated! As for Ginny's gift, it will resurface at the appropriate time. Thanks for the kind words! -- Jim

Jim,

An interesting end to the chapter but I can see this will be away for them to progress their relationship (as friends) and their trust in one another. I don't really think their is too much Ican say about this chapter, its just as good as the rest and Harry's development is believable and plausable. Its another strong chapter and a great read (twice) and I am greatly looking forward to the next one and the one after that and the one after that.

Their was a problem with my next chapter that is being sorted at the moment. Its driving me crazy but hopefully we will get there, soon. - Craig

Author's Response: Hi Craig, Safe to say, it will be a learning experience for both of them, Harry especially. In fact, he will learn a lot of things now that he is away from the Dursleys. Good luck on your next chapter - I'll be looking for it. Thanks for the rating and review! -- Jim

Wait a second here, I thought she convinced you not to end with cliffhangers? That's a laugh, I think this is the most you've left us hanging! Oh well, wonderful chapter, even though the ending was kind of depressing. I can relate to Ginny's irrational thoughts, I think all young girls have them, we're all crazy. I hope Harry gets over his "having to stutter to seem dumb" phase soon, it's getting rather annoying. I'm sure Ginny will realize that Harry didn't mean to leave her out and that she shouldn't have expected him to invite her along when it was McGonagall taking him. Hopefully anyway, keep up the good work!

Author's Response: Hi Lauren, Mine was actually worse. But don't worry, I won't leave them or you hanging. Harry's stammering reflects the mistreatment he received while with the Dursleys. McGonagall already has some insights into it, and we'll see what happens as Harry spends more time with the Weasleys. Thanks, as always, for your review! -- Jim

Nice chapter Jim. I was well satisfied with the chapter length :-) As per the usual refrain poor Harry and DARN THOSE DURSLEYS. I could actually feel the panic in Harry while reading this chapter. Being a victim of the occasional panic attacks myself I was well impressed with how you conveyed his emotions.
But in light of Ginny's reaction: being a girl myself but no longer 10 (thank God) her reaction to me was easily understandable. She feels like she really got through to Harry in their afternoon together especially the vulnerability she showed in including him and inviting him to her pond, so as his new friend I'm sure she expected to be included in the shopping trip. But her reaction I fear just set him back...way back.
Mr Weasley is just the sweetest. I loved the interaction between him and Harry. McGonagall was my favorite. She was the perfect person to take him shopping, and her selection for Ginny's gift was interesting "a diary doesn't talk back" and Harry's ice cream selection treacle tart. So sweet!!
love jk

Author's Response: Hi jk! Shopping in Diagon Alley definitely was Harry's first major test in the wizarding world. I thought Minerva would be a good guide for this outing. I'm glad you thought Ginny's reaction was understandable. In the next chapter, we'll see much more of how these two kids act and react towards each other. Thank so much for reviewing! -- Jim
