Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, is an old British tradition where (one tradition has it) the upper class nobility would give a box containing food and fruit, small gifts, clothing, and/or money to the household servants, merchant class people, and trades people (milkman, dustman, coalman, butcher, etc.) who served them well over the past year. These gifts, given in plain boxes instead of personally wrapped, gave the holiday its name.
Today, the celebration is with family and friends, either having a large gathering together or going to the homes of their friends, sharing gifts, food, cakes, etc.
In trying to lift up everybody's spirits while the war with Lord Voldemort continues, the Gryffindor students decide to rekindle the Boxing Day tradition over the Christmas holidays.
