Bio:
Yes, that's right, the name is "Rhetor" now; I asked Dino to change it for me. Why? Because that's the name I use on all my other fanfic sites, and I wanted to be consistent.

These days I'm spending my time writing original fiction rather than fan fiction. I've actually had a few stories published! Actually that's another reason for using the name "Rhetor;" the old name was too close to my real one, and there is still some bias against fan fiction writers out there in the publishing world. If you'd like news about my original fiction, send me an e-mail here or on LiveJournal and I'll tell you how to find it.

I'm an American male of eastern European Jewish extraction. I was born in Michigan in 1960 and have been living in Rhode Island or its environs since getting married in 1987. I'm still married and have two children, born 1994 and 1999.

I first heard of Harry Potter in 2000, when I was driving to the grocery store and heard an interview of JKR by Terri Gross on NPR. Then my daughter's godmother gave her a copy of The Sorceror's Stone nine months later and I was hooked. I find that I have come to care inordinatly much for the well-being of these characters; it disturbs me.

I was never any kind of "shipper", and before HBP I had a bet with myself that Harry would fall temporarily in love with Luna (which would mature him) and possibly have some sort of fling with Tonks (because I felt she was being deliberately sexualized in the text). I did think Ginny was probably his eventual destiny, but I had no clear idea of whether that would materialize during the seven-book series. Anyway, a fellow can cheerfully admit that he's been wrong.

I have loved writing since I was old enough to spell, and wrote quite a lot of fiction and poetry when I was in my teens. Since then my writing has all been drawn towards nonfiction and I haven't had much chance to write "creatively." SIYE gave me an opportunity finally to do some writing, and was a joy; now I'm writing original fiction and loving it, and I have all of you to thank.

I've also had great pleasure in coming to know -- only through e-mail exchanges and reading their work, but still -- many interesting and clever authors, betas, staffers and members on this site, some of whom have become good friends.

I want to thank all those who elected Minding the Baby as the "Best One Shot" for August of 2007. It's my first DSTA win, and I'm delighted.

I'll try to post all of my stories on my LiveJournal page, and I'd love comments or conversations emanating from there as well as from here. I also post on Phoenix Song (phoenixsong.net) under the name "Rhetor", and also on fanfiction.mugglenet.com, under the name "Rhetor". Some stories that might not be within spec for SIYE will appear there. Here are my non-SIYE stories:

  • The Torch, a post-HPB one-shot that is mostly about Hermione. It won the "Phoenix Moment" Challenge that was sponsored by The Sugar Quill and The Leaky Cauldron.

  • The Only Way Out, a one-shot about the fate of Fabian and Gideon Prewett.

  • Returning Were As Tedious, a multi-chapter fic (still WIP as of August, 2007) about the education, life and times of Severus Snape. It's designed to be canon-compliant, except for certain particular assumptionsI made before DH was publishesd.
