My…Hero

A/N: Characters aren’t mine! I wasn't going to post this now. I was going to work on it a bit more but I decided that as a birthday present to me I was going to go ahead and post it. So enjoy!

(1st person)

I tore the parchment from her hands and read it, holding my hand just out of her reach so she couldn’t snatch the parchment back.

“That’s wonderful!” I said, completely excited once I had read the neat scrawl, “You’ve worked for this for a long time. This is the end. After this study you will be fully certified.”

“I know,” she said, flashing me a brief smile. I knew that smile. That was her fake smile. That smile might have worked on someone else, but not me, not the best friend. I knew better. “What’s with that smile? You should be happy,” I said, frowning. She wrapped her arms around her body, looking out over the vast water before us and shrugging her shoulders.

“I’m happy.”

I gave her a look of disbelief.

“Honest.”

“Now I know you are lying. Come on…tell me what’s wrong,” I urged, bumping her slightly by leaning my body against hers, “How can I fix what’s wrong if you won’t tell me what it is?”

The grin that came over her face was real, but forced. “Who said you have to fix what’s wrong?” she asked. I smiled slightly. “You should be happy. I want you to be happy. So let me fix what’s wrong,” I said, “So tell me. Please?”

I looked at her with the look I knew she couldn’t refuse. “Damn you,” she said, pushing against my shoulder, “Damn you and that face. You know what that look does to me.”

“I know.”

She glared up at me for a moment before stomping her foot and breaking. “Fine. Fine! I’ll tell you. Will that make you happy?”

“Very.”

“Then stop with the face,” she whined. I broke the look I had been holding, smiling in victory. “I’m don’t want to leave home,” she said finally.

“Why?”

“I just don’t.”

“But I thought you like being on your own and not having to answer to your mum all the time.”

“I do. But I don’t want to leave England. I don’t want to leave everyone. I’d much rather just stay here.”

“Why are you so against leaving?”

I watched as she attempted to form the words to best describe the answer to my question. A look of defeat came over her face and she raised her eyes to meet mine. Tears had formed in her eyes within seconds of our eyes meeting.

Licking her lips, preparing to answer, the first two tears fell from her eyes, running quickly down her face and disappearing at her lips.

“I’m afraid to leave,” she said, two more tears joining the first two at her lips before her voice filled with so much passion, “I’m afraid to leave because I’m afraid to leave you. I’m afraid that if I leave you, you won’t be here when I come back. I’m afraid you will be gone.”

Her eyes shined brightly with unshed tears that were replacing the tears that were now freely flowing down her cheeks. The defeated look in her eyes tore me down to my soul. The fiery little redhead I had come to know and love was gone, only to be replaced with one who looked like her whole world was crashing down around her. Long gone was the fierce attitude and mischievous eyes. They were replaced by eyes full of doubt and sorrow, accompanied by a look of sheer terror.

I couldn’t help the pang of guilt that wracked through my body at her tears. I caused them. I swore I would never make her cry again, that I would never give her a reason to. But once again I had. “But-but you will only be gone six months. I’ll still be here. Where would I go with you only being gone six months?” I asked, not completely understanding what caused her fear.

“That’s what scares me…I don’t know. I just don’t want to come home and you not be here,” she said in a small voice.

“You don’t have to worry about that. I’ll still be
here when you return.”

“You promise?” she asked, looking up at me with large eyes.

“Always,” I said with a smile.

Ginny couldn’t help but smile through her tears. I knew she wanted to wrap her arms around me so I took the first step and drew her into mine. Ginny gratefully allowed me to pull her to me and buried her head into my chest. The scent that is Ginny wafted up, filling my senses completely. The way we were at that moment was always the one place I felt the most right. With my best friend.

Ginny pulled away and looked up at me again. “I’ll go,” she said, “As long as you swear you will be right here when I come home.”

“Of course. I wouldn’t dream of being anywhere else,” I said with a warm smile.

I wrapped my arm around Ginny and pulled her to me. We were currently standing in the sand looking out over the ocean. We started this tradition her first year out of Hogwarts. Twice a year, we came, by ourselves, to the ocean. I would rent a little cottage that over looked the crystal water and we would retreat from the world we lived in for two weeks, giving us one month out of the year where we didn’t have to be ourselves. We could simply be Ginny and Harry.

This tradition cause some grief from several of the Weasley clan, but in the last three years they had learned to deal with it or just keep their displeasure to themselves. This was our time and we weren’t going to allow them to take that away.

But this time seemed different somehow. This time our little fights became different, the little touches somehow felt different and the looks we gave each other held something more. But neither Ginny, nor I, ever said a word about it. It seemed to be an unspoken rule that we both felt the difference but that we didn’t mention it. But the difference somehow felt right to me.

Ginny stepped away from me and waded out into the calm water up to her knees. I stood in the wet sand, allowing the water from the waves to wash over my feet and watched her. She always seemed so much more alive when we were here and she was near the water. The only other time I had ever seen that look on her face was when she was flying. Ginny’s eyes shined brightly, matching the gleam her curly hair cast in the bright sun. But I knew one thing that would make her look better.

I slowly shifted my feet in the water, so no noise was made, and crept up behind her. Once I was right behind Ginny I waited only a moment before scooping her up in my arms.

“Harry!!” Ginny yelped at the sudden movement, “Put me down!” She was laughing as she wrapped her arms around me and held on, continuing her protest. I ignored her and walked out farther in the water. Without warning, I threw her up into the air and released her.

“Harry James Potter!” Ginny sputtered once she managed to pull her feet under her. The water came up to just above her waist. She glared at me as she wiped the salt water from her eyes. Her hair dripped around her shoulders and I couldn’t help but smile at the sight of her.

“Your hair looks good wet.”

“I know that,” she snapped, “You say that all the time. If you wanted my hair wet I think you could have found a better way to do it. Not dumping me in the ocean.”

A normal person would have cowered under her glare, but not me. Ginny never truly got angry with me. I asked her about it once and her answer was simple. She said, “You can never be truly angry with someone who makes you laugh.” That was it, pure and simple.

And evil gleam came into Ginny’s eyes in the moments I was thinking and before I could move away she was next to me, throwing herself at me. The sudden force from her leap threw me off balance and before I knew what was happening I was resurfacing.

“That was so not fair,” I said. Ginny grinned impishly and stuck her tongue out.

“You threw me in first,” she countered.

“But you looked like you needed to cool off. Besides, it was such and easy target.”

“Oh bite me,” she said. This was one of her favorite comebacks when she had nothing else she could think of. At one time, I had counted every time she said it, vowing to pay her back, but I had given up on that long ago. There were simply to many times she had said it for me to keep up.

“Okay,” I said with a shrug.

Ginny cocked one eyebrow at me with my statement. I advanced towards her with a sly smile. Ginny’s eyes widened when she realized what I was going to do and she began backing up. But she didn’t pay attention to her footing and in one second she slipped, and disappeared into the water, but not before she managed to grab hold of my arm, taking me with her.

Today was our last day in our paradise, then it was back to our real life. Back to our reality.

We spent several hours in the cool water simply enjoying ourselves. It wasn’t long before the sun began to set. As soon as Ginny noticed that, she squealed and jumped on my back. “Gin!” I laughed, “Do you have to do that every time?”

“Yes I do now stop complaining.”

“But you’ve seen the same sunset a hundred times before.”

“I know. But I want to remember each one.”

Slowly she climbed from my back and the two of us swam out, away from the shore. For some reason the sunset was always more beautiful the farther from the shore you were. Once we stopped I couldn’t help but watch Ginny more than the sun. She was so beautiful when she was happy.

At some point during the setting sun, Ginny must have felt my stare for she turned to look at me. At that moment I wanted nothing more than to kiss her, but something stopped me. The look that came over Ginny’s face started out confused but slowly changed to something else that I couldn’t explain. Without warning we both found ourselves leaning in at the same time. In the back of my brain I knew that this one moment could change everything. It could be the best moment of my life or it could ruin the best friendship I have. But I ignored the last thought and moved in. As our lips met, the rest of the world melted away. The feelings I had at that very moment were the best of my life and I never wanted those feelings to end. But they did. They were forced to.

Within seconds of our lips coming into contact we both forgot everything, including that we were in water. Water that was far over our heads. As soon as our feet stopped kicking we sank.

We broke apart instantly and surfaced, laughing. Ginny raised one hand to wipe the hair and water from her eyes. “Oops,” she said, giggling. I laughed along with her, taking her hand and slowly pulling her back to shore.

Ginny and I walked back to the house, both soak and wet, exchanging kisses every few steps. Once we got back to the house it was like all the years of pent up feeling came to the surface. My lips met Ginny’s and they never left hers the whole way to the bedroom.

(3rd person)

Ginny woke up slowly. The bed was warm, making her not want to leave it. Her back was pulled tightly against Harry’s chest. She moved slightly, repositioning herself just enough to get comfortable but not enough to disturb Harry. Just as she got settled she felt a feather light touch brush across her naked shoulder. Ginny couldn’t suppress her grin. She wiggled in Harry’s grip until he released her enough so that she could turn in his arms.

Harry’s eyes shined brightly at her. “Good morning beautiful,” he whispered.

“Good morning.”

Harry kissed Ginny’s forehead and sighed, “We have to go home today.”

“I know,” Ginny said with a hint of depression in her voice, “Then I leave Friday.”

“I know,” Harry said, “But it’s only six months. And I’ll be waiting for you when you get back.”

“Promise?”

“Always.”

___ _____

(just over six months later)

Ginny stood alone, in the rain, the day after she had returned. The people who had previously stood with her had abandoned her once the rain had begun to fall, but Ginny had refused to move. The last person had left her over an hour ago but she still was unable to make herself move.

Ginny’s tears fell nearly as fast as the raindrops, merging with the crystal drops just before dissolving into the ground. Her right hand never left her stomach as she looked down at the freshly turned earth, rubbing idly as she always did when she was distressed. Ginny’s normally pale features were flushed, both from the tears she had cried and the wind, which had chapped her face slightly.

A call from one of her brothers caused Ginny to turn her head ever so slightly, her eyes never moving. She felt a slight pressure against her stomach just before she felt it through her hand causing her to avert her eyes ever so briefly from the ground to her stomach, before letting them fall back to the ground.

The voice called yet again, bidding her to come in out of the rain. Ginny wiped just under her right eye with her free hand, drawing the moisture from her tears and the rain from one small patch of her face. She finally began to turn, her eyes lingering on the same spot for as long as they could. As she turned, her brother could clearly see how the rain was making her dark robes cling to her protruding stomach.

With one last glance at the spot on the ground before drifting away Ginny whispered into the air, “It was only six months…You didn’t keep your promise, Harry.

As she walked away, she was leaving the rain to fall, which was causing the freshly overturned dirt to become muddy. On the ground, where Ginny’s eyes had gazed, gleaming under the coat of raindrops was a large stone. On it read six simple words.

HARRY JAMES POTTER

Below that, in smaller letters, read:

MY FALLEN HERO

A/N: Just two things. In case you didn’t catch the little hints at the end, Ginny’s pregnant (around seven months). Also, just to explain the title. My…Hero. The ellipse was so I could omit the FALLEN part from the last line. That’s all. Hope you enjoyed it.
