Reviews For Saving Harry

Reviewer: FlaGinnyGirl Signed Date: 2010.04.18 - 10:56PM Title: Wands, Witches, and Wizards

I was reading Harry's anticipation of History of Magic class and had to laugh...
I know you don't like DD and it's evedent in this stroy when you have Harry feeling such hatered ans contempt for him, but it's your stroy and therefore your perrogative, DD is rally getting bad tho' isn't he. I think he really does have Harry's best interests at heart, he just has no clue how to do it OR there could be a HUGE mind blowing twist in the story where DD truns out to be possesd by Voldemort....oooh I may have to read ahead....NAH, I wouldn't do that.
Thank God for Prof McG. she's really stepping up in this story.
Harry and GInny both flying, together, yet seperate feeling the warm feelings sent by one to the other...
Well Harry's had quite a first day hasn't he ?!?!?!? So much for keeping a low profile....LOL
I'm glad he's going to sleep in hs bed tonight tho' he's slowly geting used to thngs.

Author's Response: For the Muggle-borns and those raised by Muggles (like Harry), an informative HoM class taught by a competent and alive professor would be valuable. I needed someone for an ongoing antagonist, and DD volunteered. Draco was always going to self-destruct, and I wanted Snape to be enigmatic. Wait until you finish the story, then decide. No Voldy possession. The other thing i wanted to do was bring out the softer side of McG without losing her wonderful steeliness. Through the duplicate flying scenes, I wanted to show exactly what you wrote - even while apart, H and G are together and they knew it. With H's first day I wanted to show the ramifications of DD's decisions. Lots to discuss, eh? H is a bit more comfortable and remember his Silencing charm. Thanks again, Jim

Well you have told me I was wrong about the soul bond if I wouldn't of got that response before this chapter I would be 100 percent sure you had a soul bond going on I do like what you were saying more soul mates and such I don't know just seems like there connection is on a whole other level than what I would think would be ordinary.

Do like the stars slip in there again had know idea she got so many names from stars. And I thought I knew an awful lot guess I was wrong LOL

Don't know what to think about Dumbledore I think only a miracle will have those two in a good relationship by the time you end this.

Author's Response: Hi Tad, I can see why readers would think I was showing Harry and Ginny in the early stages of a soul bond, so please don't think you were wrong. Instead I wanted to show them as made for each other, so their relationship was natural and instinctive, as symbolized by their hand holding and flying.

I do like to throw canon items into the mix but in different ways than the stories did. The stars are one of those. No need to comment on DD since you've finished the story and know where they ended up. My intent was to show transition, and let the readers know that DD and H had finally found some common ground. Best, Jim

dumbledore is not getting any better, is he? he is just making it all worse, and i thought the moment with mcg and harry was so touching. i like seeing this side to her!
it will be interesting to read the quiddich, and i do hope he gets on with hermione!

Author's Response: What's the saying? Things have to get worse, before they get better. I always felt McG had so much more depth than what we saw in canon (plus I love how Maggie Smith portrays her).

Harry and Hermione have some interesting parallels that will get in their way initially. -- Jim

Blend in???? Yikes, there aren't many more ways he could stick out!! LOL! And what the heck is wrong wtih Dumbledore, using Legilemency on him and getting caught at it? Your Dumbldore is more of a Dumbledork, isn't he? Argh. I keep hoping to see him return to the wise and caring man he was in canon (except for the manipulative stuff, of course, he was pretty wise and caring overall in canon). Guess that's not gonna happen,. huh? It was a fun first day. It made sense for Ron the Quidditch expert to be the one who knew Harry was the youngest Seeker in a century. And I love the way you've taken Hermione down quite a few pegs. Never have liked her all that well - I'm not fond of know-it-all's and I really resented it when she got Harry and Ron's lines in the films, grrrr (not her fault, it was the screenwriter's fault, but it didn't make me like her any better). Harry and Ginny's "connections" over all those miles was an interesting development.

Abraxan

Author's Response: Kinda naive, eh? Dumbledore is adjusting to Harry as much as Harry is trying to figure out Dumbledore. Safe to say, they've both made mistakes.

I wanted to take a different approach to Hermione, so we'll see an evolution with her and her relationships. LOL - people get upset with Emma Watson for getting lines that aren't hers in canon. It's the writer, as you point out. Harry and Ginny are destined for each other, so that's just one of my ways of showing it. Plus, they're fun to write! Again, thanks for all these wonderful comments. -- Jim

Ahhh, Hermione. The annoying little know-it-all we may eventually come to love. And poor Harry, still so uncomfortable around Ron, I can't wait to continue reading about that growing relationship.

Slytherin Friends! YAY! ^^ I love how you pointed out Harry wasn't the only one considered for a different house. Again, another aspect never explored in the books and you found it, congrats Jim! OH! Also, thank you for the author's note at the beginning, it does help a lot in decifering their different problems and as you said there really are HUGE differences between the two. I love the building relationships, but don't I always? Anyways, off to classes.

Uh-oh. Never a good way to start off. I feel so bad for Harry, the whole wandless and wordless magic is like breathing for him and they are asking him not to do it. *sighs* The poor boy. And Hermione, yes I did always find the 1st year Hermione slightly annoying if you couldn't already tell and your Hermione is getting on my nerves even more. *sighs* Let's see if I can finish the chapter without wanting to hurt the ickle-firstie.

Quick little thing, that whole "My Boy" thing annoyed me even in the series. Okay, now to continue...

Yeah, see...Harry's little rapid fire is actually a lot less then I thought it would be, I mean, I still have some of the conversation with Dumbeldore left but even still. It seems as if he is doing everything to drive Harry more and more AWAY rather then earn Harry's trust...

I loved the Room of Requirement scene, very nice. And the interaction with the house elf, again another band of creatures that Harry is earning the respect and trust of simply because he is being himself. ^^ I loved it! *smiles* Okay, onto the next part. Oh...and Dumbeldore's Legilimency into Harry's brain...I'm seriously trying NOT to find a way to hurt the fictional man...

MCGONAGALL!!! I love that woman! I'm so glad Harry went to her! ^^ And how to get into her quarters, that is TOTALLY ingenious!

Awwww!!! Harry//Ginny Bonding and they don't even FULLY know yet! That's totally adorable and I LOVE it!

I love the ending. It is very obvious Harry's relationship with the twins and Ron is really quickly rebuilding itself. Of course he doesn't FULLY trust them yet but he is getting there as they continue to act like nothing has changed.

Overall the chapter was amazing and I hope I didn't confuse you with my going back and forth but I had to make sure I included everything. I can't wait to move onto the next chapter and congrats on another amazing chapter Jim!

~Kat

Author's Response: You are really making your way through the chapters! Ron continues to be Ron, mostly not noticing his impact on people. I thought one of the easiest ways to show shared qualities was to have some of the firsties discover they could have been in the same house. Daphne and Tracey were easy to start with, and I like that they don't have established canon personalities so I can make them what I want for the story. Neville and Harry show some similar qualities also, but express them in decidely different ways, hence, the stuttering and stammering.

DD using Legilimency seemed to be the ultimate violation of trust, so symbolic. Plus, you'll see how it brings two of our characters together. On the other hand, we have McG, who understands what Harry needs. Thanks, as always, for your amazing reviews! -- Jim

What a stonker of a day, described in a stonker of a chapter. There's almost too much to get my head around, which I can assure you is a good thing. I'm glad Harry feels good enough to stay in his bed tonight!

The highlight for me has to be the moonlight flying, where Harry and Ginny are unconsciously echoing each other: it's almost reminiscent of some of the better bonding stories. The mirroring between McGonagall and molly is also rather nice; two maternal figures for two children who desperately need them, and each other.

Poor Hermione, she needs to work on her people skills. OK, so canon!Ron was an insensitive wart, but he wasn't making it up out of whole cloth. I just hope that by the time Halloween rolls around, they don't just leave her to the troll's tender mercies...

And what is Dumbledolt smoking? Harry's hardly been in the castle but a day and already the great beardy twit is violating his mind. At this rate, Harry's going to be getting on with Snape better than with Brian...

Nice to see that Harry is keeping up with his plan to talk with people in other houses. So he has some Slytherin friends, who's he going to talk with in the other houses? He mentions Susan from the 'Puffs but no 'Claws yet...hmmm. Interesting twist on the "multiple house" thing with the Sorting: of course canon!Harry has no clue how common it might be, and he's never inclined to ask for fear of people finding out he was "almost a Slytherin"! For all we know, it might be more usual for people to be offered several choices, and it would certainly make sense.

I'm really enjoying this, and hope we can prevail upon you to take it as far as you possibly can ;-)

/me plumps up his bean-bag and summons more pop-corn

Author's Response: Hey NAC, I'm really am trying to reduce the size of the chapters! By the way, I had to look up "stonker." Quite a vocabulary there!

The moonlight flying was one of my favorite scenes in the story so far. It pretty much expresses H and G's relationship, both emotionally and in a physical context, with their maternal support.

Dumbledolt? That's a new one! He is the type of person you would think smoked that funny weed. Explains a lot, doesn't it? He and Harry have a long way to go. Oh, and there's nothing meant by not mentioning any 'Claws. It would be hard to imagine every student having only a specific house's qualities, so that thought helps to create common ground among the various students and makes Harry's situation a bit easier.

LOL - you're relentless, aren't you? Regardless, thanks for another perceptive and articulate review! -- Jim

More and more I like your version of this better than Jo's. I seems more "realistic" than the whole Draco, Neville episode in the first book. While I wont push for an update, be sure I will be waiting.

In a way, I'm glad I didn't have the time to read chapter by chapter...it gives me more to read when I Do have the time.

Darian

Author's Response: Very nice compliments, Darian! Thank you. I'm really glad you are continuing to enjoy the story. You'll get a chance to rest a bit as I am only in the early stages of the next chapter. Thanks for all your kind words. -- Jim

I thought that Harry had written a letter to Ginny directly after the feast, when he came back into the dorm from the bathroom? But when you had him go into the library it was like he was writing it for the first time. Just thought I'd point that out even though someone else probably has. Anyway, brilliant chapter, I loved the connection between him and Ginny flying, I always wanted them to fly together and now they're continuing it without even knowing it! Stupid little girl thinks she can kiss Harry on the cheek, I don't think it would be Hermione cause she'd be too afraid. But, she probably has an enormous crush on him because of how intelligent he is and how much better he is than her. Don't the other girls know they don't have even the slimmest of chances against our Ginny? Man, they're going to be so mad when they see how close she is with Harry! Anyway, now I'm a little upset I've finally caught up, hope the next update is sooner than later! Keep up the fantastic work!

Author's Response: Lauren, Congrats for catching up. You're right. The first part of the letter basically repeated the first. The rest was new stuff, though. Which witch do you think kissed Harry on the cheek? Definitely not Hermione, though that would be a shocker, wouldn't it? I've written a bit of the next chapter, but much work remains, so no promises when it will be posted. Thanks again for all the wonderful reviews. They are greatly appreciated! -- Jim

Reviewer: Arnel Signed Date: 2008.06.03 - 01:04PM Title: Wands, Witches, and Wizards

Author's Response: Hi Arnel! Only half a BB for DD for doing legilimency on HP? You are too nice of a person! But McG, Molly and Arthur may have a "few" thoughts to share with the headmaster.

Jim, to tell the truth, I've given up on Dumbledore ever understanding Harry. He thinks of poor Harry as an adult adversary which gives him licence to use any method of information-gathering at his disposal, including Legilimency. No matter what he says to McGonagall or the Weasleys, I think he's made up his mind that he's failed with Harry and that because of this failure he can do whatever he bloody well pleases. I really hope that what McG and Arthur and Molly have to say registers, but I'm resigned to the fact that the old codger will politely hear them out and then ignore their suggestions. DD is just too set in his ways. Therefore, I can't get angry over what he does to Harry, thus the low BB, because all my compassion is going to the recipient of said bad treatment and to those around him who are trying their best to help him feel at home in his new environments.

Author's Response: Hi Arnel, See, I said you're a nice person. I know Harry, the Weasleys, etc. will appreciate your compassion. DD, on the other hand, is really struggling. The evolution of his and Harry's relationship will continue to be a major storyline.

Please excuse the late response. I was out of town all week. Thanks for explaining the reasoning behind your half-BB rating. -- Jim

Oh, great chapter. Dumbledore certainly seems to never be able to do anything right--trying out Legilimency on someone who already doesn't trust him.
That next to last line seems rather ominous--with Harry thinking he should blend in more--that could be good, or it could be very bad.
Anxiously awaiting another chapter!!!

Author's Response: Hi Duke, Sorry it's taken a while to respond. I was out of town on business and couldn't get online.

Harry's thought was based on the amount of attention he had attracted, so he is hopeful he can blend in and be just another student. I wasn't able to work on the next chapter during the week, so it will be a bit later than usual. Thanks, Jim

Well written, as always!

Boy, oh, boy... you sure are paying Dumbledore back for his many sins in the canon tales. Ouch!

I liked the interaction w/Ginny and the fact that both of them decided to go flying on their own and had almost exactly the same reaction. Looking forward to the next chapter.

Cheers,

The Ghost

Author's Response: Hi Mr. Ghost, Thanks for floating by and leaving a review. Regarding Dumbledore, let's just say he and Harry have a lot to grow through before they'll begin to undestand each other. I'm glad you liked the H/G interaction. It's one of my favorite scenes. Thanks, Jim

Maybe Harry is finally settling in. He seemed a bit more comfy with Ron and the twins as well. Can't wait to see what McGonagal says to Dumbledore about looking at Harry's thoughts. Not kosher!

~christy

Author's Response: Hi Christy! Harry would like to regain his feelings of trust with Ron and the twins. It's just a matter of overcoming the reactions he developed during his time with the Dursleys. I think Minerva may have a few comments about the lack of judgment exhibited by the headmaster when he peeked into Harry's mind. Thanks for your review. -- Jim

ARGH! Is it possible to strangle an imaginary character? Oh wait... yes it is... I'll just add that bit to my own story. As you probably guessed, Dumbledore is in for a very bad day just as soon as I start writing the second story in my series. ;) I love how you have envisioned him. In many ways he is exactly the same as he was in canon, but now we see the darker and more self centered side of him as well. Bravo. :) I also really enjoy the dynamic of McGonagall and Harry as student and teacher. it feels very natural, and very warm. Kudos. :) Keep it up. :) Chris

Author's Response: Hi Chris, Have fun taking out your irritation on DD! :-) I am trying to retain canon qualities with most of the characters, just emphasizing some more than others. The McG/Harry relationship is another chance to bring out qualities that were only hinted at in canon. It's fun to contrast the inner and outer Minerva. Thank you so much for your kind comments and good luck with the second year in your series. Best, Jim

First things first: No Tissues, but half a Bat Bogie shot at Dumbledore for continuing to bungle his way through his relationship with Harry. More on this later.

Well, it seems as though Harry did fairly well on his first day, all things considered. I must say, you "think" eleven-year-old boy rather well. I love the fact that Harry digs his own hole rather well when he refuses to tell the truth when Flitwick questions him after the wandless magic incident in Charms. I say this because even normal children will do exactly what Harry did when confronted by authority for their mistakes. It makes it doubly poignant with Harry, though, because of his experiences with the Dursleys.

As usual, my wand is firmly pointed at Dumbledore for using Legilemancy on Harry without his permission. Thank goodness for Hermione. Harry might not appreciate her yet, but I've got to hand it to that girl for knowing her stuff! I'm also thankful that Ginny has agreed to pass on reports of incidents like this to Molly and Arthur. I know they'll check into this.

I literally cheered and pumped a fist in the air when Harry found the Room of Requirement. I'm very glad that you introduced this special place to Harry this early in the year because, unfortunately, McGonagall might not always be available when he needs comfort. However, since Harry did find her, I am glad to see that she dropped her stiff upper lip and did her best to comfort Harry when he needed it. (I'm also very glad that he trusts her enough to find her quarters in the first place!) The icing on the proverbial cake was her letting him fly. I love McGonagall's reaction to Harry's Wronski Feint and the fact that she marches right up to Wood afterwards and announces in front of everyone of Harry's house mates that she's found Gryffindor a Seeker! (Again I cheered, this time for Harry who weathered the admiration and adulation and congratulations from his peers fairly well.)

I have to hand it to Molly. I love it when she confronts her children about the things they think she's not wise to! She handled Ginny's restlessness like a pro and her reaction to Ginny's Wronski Feint and other acrobatics just made me grin. I do love that woman... As funny as it seems, she's become my role model!

Altogether, this was a very enjoyable chapter. Two thumbs up and a big smile to you for continuing to keep me on the edge of my chair thoughout the chapter. I really do love this story!

Author's Response: Hi Arnel! Only half a BB for DD for doing legilimency on HP? You are too nice of a person! But McG, Molly and Arthur may have a "few" thoughts to share with the headmaster.

So I "think" like an eleven-year old boy? Is that a good thing? :-) Between you and me, I actually hear him, so I just type as quickly as I can. I have to admit I was surprised he didn't tell Flitwick it was just a mistake.

Harry needed a place where he could be alone when needed, and we all know the hazards of going into broom cupboards! So the RoR seemed like a good solution. It also gives McG a place to hold his wandless training. I didn't want to repeat canon with McG seeing Harry save Neville's rememberall, so this seemed like a good solution, Plus, it allowed the parallel with Ginny and her mum. Isn't Molly cool? You do realize that whenever I think of you or see an email, I'm going to picture her?

You certainly bring a lot of joy to my writing life, and I can't thank enough. Best, Jim

Awww... Ickle Harrikins is already feeling a bit better! I find his relationship with Hermy to be very interesting, and I look forward to how that will play out. I think that he softened towards her a lot since the whole Legilimency thing, but they still have a long way to go before they get to any preliminary form of friendship.

Dumbly's being a butt--as usual--but (hehe) I think that he kinda deserves all of Harry's anger for what he's doing. I like how you're presenting him. He manipulates when he worries, so this seems somewhat in character for him. I still love Dumbly, though.

I liked the whole sorta H/G scene toward the end-----this isn't gonna be an H/G bond story, is it? ('cause I've been planning one for a long time now, and it starts out with abused!Harry, and I don't want it to accidentally be the same as yours or something).

Author's Response: Hi Fleury, Harry and Hermione share a lot of qualities, but they come at them from almost opposite directions. Intelligence: Harry hid is; it defined Hermione; magic: neither knew they were magical, but Hermione was Muggle-born, while Harry, unknown to him, had an extensive history. Hemione desperately needs a friend, so we'll see how quickly they understand the other.

DD has guided the Light side for so long, it's second nature to him. He's trying to do the same thing with Harry.

Definitely not a bond story, but their understanding of the other is instinctive. Thanks for your comments and question. -- Jim

Another great chapter!

Sorry I didn't review the last one... I just read it tonight with this one!

I know Harry was feeling overwhelmed. I like how you allowed him to be that way. You didn't make everything out to be all 'peaches and cream' for his arrival.

And I just LOVE what you did with Malfoy! That git has always gotten on my nerves from the first snooty conversation! It's amazing he doesn't drown when it rains - his nose is THAT high up in the air! I'm glad you took the time to knock him down a few pegs.. ok.. a LOT of pegs!

Now.. onto the first potions class. That's the one I'm worried about. How is Snape going to handle Harry in this story? How is he going to handle the shy, meek, and anxiety riddled boy named Harry?

And how much of a butt chewing is DD going to get from our favorite Transfiguration teacher, never mind Molly Weasley?

Inquiring redheads want to know! hehehehehe

Author's Response: Thanks, rhb! Do you realize you just read about 30,000 words tonight?

I thought at best, Harry's arrival at Hogwarts would be difficult. So, with all that has happened, he had to be overwhelmed.

In my humble estimation, Malfoy still has a lot more pegs to be knocked down. I'm sure I can find someone to do that! (Next chapter maybe?) Harry attends Potions in the next chapter. I don't think Snape sees Harry as he is at this point, so their first meeting should prove interesting

We do know exactly how Minerva will react to DD's legilimency. Could you imagine McG and Molly double-teaming Albus? Hmmm, I may borrow that idea! LOL - Inquiring redheads will have to wait! Thanks for another fun review! -- Jim

There is so much in this chapter, and the story moves so well! A few bits that caught my eye, Hermione , "the hole in the stomach" feeling by both Harry and Ginny (very age approrpiate I think, and sets up the deeping of a romantic angle, right? RIGHT?? Oh sorry ), Dumbledore has a lion in front of his stair case? Very interesting The possibility of friendship between Houses, and the greatly diminshed influence of Draco. Ah gosh, there are so many little bits that change, yet fit... Okay I'll stop no and try again when I am coherent. :-)

Author's Response: Thanks for such nice comments! To address what "caught your eye," Hermione and Harry's relationship will evolve; and "the holes in the stomach" weren't coincidental, so you can read whatever you want into that. :-)

I doubt there could be friendship between the Houses if Draco were a strong influence. Hopefully all the changes fit and will continue to do so! Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim, I'm back for round three.

I'm glad that Harry seems 'fine' although that is his favourite word for not doing ok :)
Kinda feel sorry for your Hermione. She's clearly a girl that was shunted in the muggle world for being bookish and smart and she desperatly seeks connection to the magical world not clearly seeing she is insulting anyone. Harry therefore ignoring her certainly has an impact on her but Harry later does something every kid does, he uses the info she gave him, thanks her and then ignores her again although not on purpose, I'm sure.

Harry does his best to follow up on promises made to Arthur, Molly and Ginny by meeting children from al houses and so Ron meets Slytherins, fancy that!

Ooooh your Dumbodore makes me mad, using Legillemency on a child. Nasty Bugger. Never learns.
But wait till Minerva sets him straight and gives him a piece of his mind after Harry confided in her.

The flying bit with Molly, Ginny and Harry and Minerva was tremendously fun to read.
This time Harry doesn't even have to save Neville's rememberal to become seeker.

Thanx Jim, it's been fun. Untill next time. Collinda (press 'submit' just once LOL)

Author's Response: Hi Collinda, Thanks so much for catching up and leaving these reviews. I'm hoping Dino can fix the notification system, since others have been affected, too.

You've got my Hermione. Her relationship with Harry will evolve. As for Ron, he had the benefit of meeting the two witches before they were sorted into Slytherin, so that helped.

Minerva will have a thing or two to share with Albus. :-) I'm really glad you liked the flying scenes. They are among my favorites in the story, so far.. Thank you for taking the time to leave the reviews -- they are always enjoyable! And thanks for hitting "Submit" only once - LOL! -- Jiim
