Challenge 2018-3 Awards

And into the darkness shines a light to reveal the two cloaked categories...

  • Best Mystery in the 'Strangers in the Dark' challenge, and
  • Most Romantic in the 'Strangers in the Dark' challenge.

In addition to its many accumulating awards and recognitions, we now award the story "Strangers and Sticking Charms" by glasscandlegrenades with the above two challenge 2018-3 citations.

Sincere appreciation to MS and YK for their diligent judging!

First of all -- great story! Hope at least some of this discussion space goes to this fact!

There are, however, other matters to pursue too. As some of you may recall, back in the spring I indicated that I had taken on other competing responsibilities and that I would be retiring from my challenge responsibilities. At the time I thought I might have a replacement lined up to step right in, but that is no longer the case. We do have two SIYE members (ykirirn and cyko2041) who are willing to help out but we do not currently have a volunteer committing to lead.

Given recent discussions, that might actually be a good thing. Instead of plunging ahead, it may be wiser, at this moment, to rethink things from the ground up, including goals, protocol, scheduling, leadership and other things. We do have votes for a prospective Challenge 2019-1, but you may wish to put that on the shelf for the time being, too.

I am going to step aside as originally planned, and let this discussion unfold organically, though I can check back occasionally if there are direct questions. My best wishes to all!

Well I've already said I don't mind stepping in and leading, at least for a while. If nothing else then I have the relevant access to do the people's choice award since I'm fairly sure we'd need Robert to upgrade newcomers to that admin level to access that, and I already know what running that challenges entails. I think FloreatCastellum mentioned on your other post about the possibility of "concepts rather than a challenge that is restricting. I'd be interested in what others think of this and what suggestions could be put forward for challenges using that idea. Possibly this is something along the lines of the "someone is keeping a secret" challenge that we had? It's not that long since there was a good number of entries for the challenges and I'd be sorry to see them stop all together.

James and Lily are alive is a suggestion by pleurocleous. And I have just queried if that ans something like Harry and Ginny get together in book 5 if the sort of challenges people are wanting.

FloreatCastellum came out of the woodwork on 2018.12.01 - 12:40PM to say:

Yes, we had a lot of entries for the secret challenge and that was what I was getting at. "Someone at the burrow has a secret. Tell us about it." That could be literally anything about any character at any time. It means we had a lot of varience in stories and could be the spark of something new for someone. Scenarios or specific things that essentially mean you MUST write AU or you MUST write a certain scene make that harder. What about a Christmas challenge where you have to include certain christmassy words?

ginnyweasley777 came out of the woodwork on 2018.12.02 - 10:52AM to say:

Right, I get you. The secret challenge could mean and character at any time. It could be AU or it could be written within the realms of the books. Much more open

pleurocoelus came out of the woodwork on 2018.12.03 - 12:09AM to say:

Exactly. I had replied on the other thread. (It kept blanking my posts so I apologise for all the empty posts there,)

pleurocoelus came out of the woodwork on 2018.12.03 - 12:10AM to say:

The relevant part of my rambling was this: It's the principle of simplicity. Don't over-complicate it. Keep the challenge description limited to a couple of sentences and let the writers fill in the details.

ginnyweasley777 came out of the woodwork on 2018.12.03 - 05:38AM to say:

Not sure why it was doing that to you. I've deleted the empty posts, but your posts seem to have come through it the end. I had completely forgot about the Carpe Diem challenge when I put that suggestion. I think I have a much better understanding about what writers want now. I'll have a look through past challenges later too.

ginnyweasley777 came out of the woodwork on 2018.12.03 - 01:39PM to say:

Harry plans to propose to Ginny but has been struggling to find the right time. Can be any time you want, anywhere you want, perhaps he enlists the help of someone else (Hermione?), or Ron and Hermione figure out what he's up to and he swears them to secrecy? The Final Battle is over and all Harry wants is a chance to speak to Ginny. Write a story telling how they get back together. Perhaps it's straight after the battle, perhaps it's after the funerals, the choice is yours. Just a couple of idea I've come up with after looking through past challenges. Thoughts? I'll see if I can come up with anything else.

Gin110881 came out of the woodwork on 2018.12.03 - 02:22PM to say:

There're still a few good, not too specific, choices on the old list. I'll also try to come up with a few more suggestions.

ginnyweasley777 came out of the woodwork on 2018.12.03 - 11:02PM to say:

Yes I agree. I'm just trying to see what sort of things were most popular in the past. Time turner challenge - someone stumbles upon a time Turner and is sent back in time. Your job is to decide who, how they found it, where they end up and how they get back. It could be someone from current time sent back, or it could be someone from the future who arrives, or even another version of someone. Imagine two Ron's - "Bloody hell, this is weird. It's like having a twin."
