Rolling with it...

Well.  So there are some things that need to be announced, or at least chatted about, and although I'm not truly the right person to be making announcements, I'm at least a decent sort to start chatting.

First of all, and most importantly, Spenser Hemmingway is stepping down from his Senior Administrator and Trinkets Tsar role, "effective May".  That may or may not mean tomorrow, but regardless it is certainly soon.  I don't know details, but Sir Ollivander told us that Spenser / Eric has accepted a college position in creative writing.  Fitting, I would say!

Anyway, hopefully those who know more, and perhaps our long-time SIYE icon himself, may be able to provide more information, but in the mean time, let's wish him well!

Secondly, Hannah / GinnyWeasley777, has agreed to take on the Trinkets and get them charged up again.  Thank you Hannah!  In return, I will assume full responsibility for Challenges.

Thirdly, I am aware, and somewhat disheartened, by the fair number of minor unresolved technical problems on the site, including failures in new account approval, review responses, and (for some authors) an inability to edit old chapters.  I don't personally have the control (and perhaps not the know-how) to fix these problems, but the appropriate authorities have been alerted.

I will admit that this is a difficult time for SIYE.  We are limping along, but we are not dead yet, especially if authors, readers and volunteers continue to make things happen.

Thank you all!

***Comment: Hey folks, a quick good bye. It's been a great twelve years with a great group of people here. I will going on to Portland State University to work on a Master of Arts in Writing, Book Design, and Publishing. I don't know if I would have pursued it if not for my experiences at SIYE. Great luck to all of you and thanks. One last time...Mischief managed! Spenser / Eric

Best wishes to Spenser. And I'm not going anywhere -- too many good stories here. Keep up the good work, writers!!

It is good to know that there are plans to revive the Trinkets. Sadly, it was quite calm at Siye lately. Possibly, and hopefully, the Trinkets are a way to liven up things again. Please let me know if you need for help with these activities. Anyway, thank you so much to the volunteers for their hard work in the background.

I am already in the process of figuring out where we're at with the last set of Trinkets and how to progress with the next round. Just in the middle of sorting some stuff out for work this week but I hope to at least have an update for y'all by the weekend regarding the Trinkets. :)

how can we volunteer? i will gladly help out in any way i can. i love this site too much to see it go

GHL came out of the woodwork on 2017.05.02 - 03:09PM to say:

Ah, well that's a great question!

I think our greatest need may be in terms of one or two technically adept individuals who could work with Bear on site mechanics. Bear is excellent at it, but likely has a lot of competing demands.

The natural follow-up question for a tech-savvy person would be to wonder what middleware and/or back-end this site is built upon. Sadly I don't know, but I could find out.

The second need is in Challenge judges -- not a dire need, but things got a little thin last time.

The third need would be in someone who might wish to take up the Social Media presence -- something we've lacked since JennyElf left. Again, I don't know details on our Twitter and FB accounts, but I think they exist.

Finally, we could always approve new archivists, and would certainly take volunteers, but until the rate of story posting accelerates again, this is not particularly urgent.

Finally, suggestions are always welcome for new features, but be aware that people who make suggestions are often everyone's first choice to bring those suggestions to life.

Dansahottie9 came out of the woodwork on 2017.05.02 - 09:39PM to say:

With as often i check in here i am game for any of those except the tech savvy one as i am only half way through my degree for programming. Just say the word and ill help out :)

MdJ came out of the woodwork on 2017.05.03 - 06:46AM to say:

Hello, I have never really responded to anything on this site. But I love the stories here and I would hate to see it go. So I would gladly help with anything except the techy stuff. Just know english is not my first language. If there is anything I can do, just let me know.

Northumbrian came out of the woodwork on 2017.05.03 - 09:13AM to say:

Sorry to hear about the issues. This was the first site I ever posted on, and it will remain the site that gets my Harry/Ginny stories first for as long as it exists (a very long time - I hope). I'm technically useless, and pretty hopeless with social media, so I can't help in that way. Story submissions are down aren't they? I'll see what I can do to change that! :-) -N-

Kneazle_NZ came out of the woodwork on 2017.05.03 - 05:03PM to say:

This reminds me that I really should get on to the 2 or 3 stories that are currently in progress. Between work, trying to finish of my big writing project to send off to hopefully get published and a few health issues nothing's been finished

CharmHazel came out of the woodwork on 2017.05.04 - 06:47AM to say:

I am happy to help with the Social Media stuff. I am a stay at home mum, so my time is my own when the kids are at school.

GHL came out of the woodwork on 2017.05.04 - 07:33AM to say:

Wow, lots of encouraging responses!

CharmHazel, let me see if I can contact JennyElf to find out the status on the accounts -- please stay tuned.

Dansahottie9, if you're working on a programming degree, I suspect you'd not find middleware too daunting, but I can't make a hard sell to anyone right now until I find out precisely what platform(s) lie beneath what we know as SIYE.

Northumbrian & Kneazle_NZ -- wonderful to hear that creations might flow this way from those wonderful keyboards of yours! Even I have managed to knock off another 16K words on Trix quite recently, although I'd like to crank out a bit more and let it sit and flavour for a while...

Thank you everyone for taking an interest -- does make a big difference to the health of this endeavour!

FloreatCastellum came out of the woodwork on 2017.05.06 - 06:45PM to say:

I used to be a social media manager, so if Charm needs any extra help, let me know. Also happy to be a judge for the challenge as I'm unlikely to be able to enter myself!

potterfan2008 came out of the woodwork on 2017.05.07 - 01:57PM to say:

Thank you for taking the lead in this. I love this site and would hate for it to disappear as some other sites have! I agree with Northumbrian - I can't help in other areas, but I can write. Just posted a chapter and I'm working on more.

Offering my services for our Facebook account. I'm on there often and would love to help maintain it. I'm a stay at home mom right now and can help out there. I'm not on Twitter much at all. Sadly, can't help with anything technical.

moonpaw came out of the woodwork on 2017.05.21 - 11:12AM to say:

Up until now I've been a solid reader only...but I would hate to see this site go; it's hosted some of my favorite authors!! I'm not really tech-savvy, but if something needs doing that involves reading, I can help.

GHL came out of the woodwork on 2017.05.22 - 08:24AM to say:

Thank you to all who've volunteered in one form or another! I haven't enlisted anyone yet since I'm still gathering info such as the social media account details. Stay tuned!
