Dudleyâ€™s Turn Challenge 2013-4

Petunia Dursley saw the beginning signs of accidental magic in Dudley and reluctantly contacted Harry Potter, the only magical person she could come close to trusting. She met with Harry and Ginny for lunch and discussed the situation. Their conclusion was to hook up Dudley with a half blood witch similar in magical power. That way she could teach him of the magical world and still know of the Muggle world he lives in.

The Challenge is to write a story of how Harry & Ginny eventually get Dudley and a witch together to help Dudley with his newly discovered magic and introduce him into the magical world.

Rules:

1. All general submission rules apply. Stories over 20,000 words are discouraged but not prohibited. R-rated stories are allowed but discouraged. Judges are not required to read stories over 20,000 words or any R-rated stories.

2. CORRECTION: All entries must be submitted under “Dudley’s Turn” Challenge 2013-4, sub-category of SIYE Challenges and be submitted by midnight SIYE Time, Friday, November 15, 2013.

3. Completed stories are seriously preferred. Multiple chapters are allowed as long as all the requirements are in the chapters that are submitted by the deadline.

4. The categories for judging are Best Overall, Matchmaking, Awkwardness, and The People’s Choice Award.

***The basis of this Challenge idea came from an unknown seminar moderator at the LeakeyCon fan fiction convention earlier this year. Thanks.

Interesting, but my question is why would the magic manifest itself so late? If Petunia is asking Harry and Ginny for help, that means Harry has been at school for sometime....

For logic's sake, I'd have to assume this would be after the Dementor attack; perhaps Muggles who 'carry' the gene for magic have interesting reactions to their souls almost being drawn out. Maybe something else is drawn out as well. Anyway, if I choose to accept this mission, that's how I'd justify it cropping up so late.

The Dementor idea is a good one. I can imagine perhaps the Dementor nearly drawing Dudley's soul maybe triggered something latent in him, as you said. Looking forward to seeing what authors will come up with. Good luck everybody.

My original thoughts were of after the Final Battle. We don't know what Aunt Petunia saw or can explain. Maybe something happened to Dudley that we don't know. He could be a late bloomer. Did Dudley ever try to do magic earlier in his life?

The Dementor shakes something lose, and then while the Dursleys spend the war year in hiding among wizards with the Order, things start happening. After the war is over, that is when Petunia would go to Harry (who by now has Ginny as his constant companion; she wouldn't have been yet immediately after the Dementor attack). There are a lot of possibilities with this one.

This is how I would start the story if I end up writing it. That said, I don't think I will, I've had a resurgence of drive for writing my full-length H/G fic, so that'll probably take up all my time =P

I'm sorry, but I'm a huge Dudley fan. I have a fanfic I have always been planning to write for many years involving Dudley finding out he is a wizard, and though the story I'm writing is set during the Deathly Hallows, you could use some of my ideas. I will post them here.

Notes from my unwritten fanfic 'Stolen Magic' - Feel free to use them: What did Dumbledore mean by "Remember my last, Petunia" in Order of the Phoenix? Rowling did say she had planned for a muggle to be unveiled as a wizard later in life, but I always assumed she never included it as it would have distracted from Harry's tale. I always thought it would have been Dudley. But did that magic really manifest later in life, or was it stolen from him? It has always been known that Muggles cant steal magic. Would Dumbledore want to do Dark Magic again after his sister died from Dark Magic? He swore never to perform Dark Magic again after Ariana died. What could make him perform such terrible magic? Did Petunia threaten to throw Harry out on the street? To cast him out, losing the powerful protection he shared when he was with family? If Dumbledore didn't help? If he didnt do this one last favour, do this one last piece of dark magic to ensure Harry's safety? And what if Dumbledore died, and the dark binding spells he used to bind Dudley's magic to himself, to prevent him knowing he was a wizard, died with him. Why did Petunia refuse to throw Harry out after Dumbledore's message "Remember my last." It could have meant that - his last piece of dark magic she forced him to perform - at the threat of Harry losing the protection he had under the Dudley's roof, where Voldemort couldn't even touch him. "You don't know what you ask of me, Petunia. My sister died because of Dark Magic! I swore never to do dark magic again! I swore on my sister's life that it would be my last. You have no idea what you're asking of me!"

Feel free to use them. I'm very busy working on Chapter 5 of my 'After the Hallows' fic (Yes, Chapter 5! Chapters 3 and 4 are with the Beta Checkers, and will be published very shortly) and Chapter 2 of 'Kissing Lessons', which is almost complete, then I'll be going onto Chapters 3, 4 and 5 of that. I won't be writing 'Stolen Magic' anytime soon. Be good to see what you all come up with. :)

I agree with the others about it's after the dementors' attack or during the war while they were hiding. But this would be more interesting if it was Dudley's children the reason Petunia would reach out to Harry.
