Forty-Eight Hours Challenge (2010-2)

A few days after the final battle, the Weasleys decide to return to The Burrow and get on with their lives.  But they find a stressed Harry sitting at the Gryffindor table in the Great Hall.  When Molly Weasley asks what’s wrong, Harry spills everything.

“I’ve been trying to have a private conversation with Ginny since this war ended but nobody will let me.  Either some bureaucrat wants me to go with him, or Ginny is guarded by her brothers, or if we do get together, there’s a crowd around us that won’t let us out of their sight!”

“Well, that’s okay.  You and Ginny, go take all the time you need.” Mrs. Weasley said while looking at the two of them.

So Harry stood up and offered his hand to Ginny, which she nervously took.  “We’ll be back in forty-eight hours.” he replied.  And before anybody had a chance to say anything, Harry turned towards Ginny and they both disappeared with a soft “Pop!”

The Challenge is to write a story filling in the events of those forty-eight hours.

Suggestions:

1.      Where did they go?

2.      What did they say?

3.      What did they do?

4.      What were peoples’ reactions before, during, and/or afterwards?

5.      And you all know of Hermione’s opinion of anybody Disapparating out of Hogwarts!

Rules:

1.      All general submission rules apply. Stories over 10,000 words are discouraged but not prohibited. R-rated stories are allowed but discouraged. Judges are not required to read stories over 10,000 words or any R-rated stories.

2.      All entries must be submitted under the Forty-Eight Hours Challenge (2010-2) sub-category of SIYE Challenges and be submitted by midnight Friday, April 30, 2010.

3.      Multiple chapters are allowed as long as all the requirements are in the chapter(s) that are submitted by the deadline.  Completed stories are seriously preferred.

4.      The categories for judging are Best Overall, Drama, Reconciliation, and Best Use of 48 Hrs.

Bonus phrases for extra creativity are the following. Using any or all of them is not required.  A good, creative story will always count much stronger than any bonus.

1)                   “When their head goes around like that it means they’re [blank].”

2)                   “Then you gently do this and then run for your life.”

3)                   “You’d really do that to me after last Tuesday?”

4)                   “This restaurant gets five stars for its [blank].”

5)                   “So this is a Muggle [blank].”

PS:  Please note the changes in the bonus questions shortly after the Challenge was posted.

Wait, are the bonus phrases really the exact same as they were for the Baby challenge?

Kezzabear came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.01 - 07:52PM to say:

It seems they are ...

AoiKazeToMidoriAme came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.01 - 08:53PM to say:

Sooo, I have two plot bunnies hopping around for this one. Are we allowed to submit 2 stories for the challange or is there a single entry limit?

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.01 - 09:03PM to say:

redandraven & Kezzabear - there shouldn't be but I will definitely check. If so, expect a change. Thanks.

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.01 - 09:04PM to say:

AoiKazeToMidoriAme - you may submit as many stories as you wish. Each one is judged on its own.

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.01 - 09:11PM to say:

To ALL - the bonus questions have been changed.

katlover070 came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.01 - 09:55PM to say:

Oh goodie! Two blanks! I really need a new laptop. On the other hand, I think I might actually do this one. I keep telling myself I will, but I think this is one I can actually complete. Crappy month though, This on top of my ScriptFrenzy screenplay...what am I getting myself into?

Dansahottie9 came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.01 - 10:53PM to say:

wow my plot bunnies are popping out of their holes... hmm... i may just enter this one.

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.01 - 11:02PM to say:

katlover070 - my first response was a blank also so don't feel bad. I removed them. This Challenge is a bit different based on various inputs. Instead of a Challenge and conditions, I have suggestions. So it's a lot less restrictive, hopefully resulting in more varied stories. It's what the people want.

ginnyweasley777 came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.02 - 10:41AM to say:

two weeks of easter hols - I may just have a good plot for this one, and the time to write it!

Dorothy came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.03 - 09:47AM to say:

How is this different from previous Challenges?

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.03 - 09:20PM to say:

Dorothy - the past Challenges had a storyline paragraph setting up the Challenge. Then there were 4 to 7 conditions that needed to get accomplished in the story. This Challenge has no conditions. However, the Challenge has some suggestions to assist in giving the Challenge story some direction. But otherwise, as long as the story "...fills in the events of those forty-eight hours," anything goes.

lonecall came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.04 - 12:51AM to say:

Question. Are we allowed to 'tweak' the beginning? Give a little more fill, reword just a bit? Or should it pretty much be word for word as written here?

lonecall came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.04 - 12:55AM to say:

Oh...and on the 'bonus sentences', do they have to be exactly as written? For example, would it have to read "When their head goes around like that it means they're ______", or can you adjust the tense..."When their heads go around like that it means they're _____"?

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.04 - 09:18AM to say:

lonecall - we're pretty loose with the rules. You can change, modify, reword, tweak, alter, vary, adjust, revise (Hermione will love you for that one) and adapt any way you wish. And the bonus question, you're fine with your example. It's close enough for me. Have fun with it.

babewithbrains came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.06 - 05:53PM to say:

Are you allowed to change a major thing, like Ginny taking Harry for forty-eight hours instead of vice versa?

GinervaMollyWeasley came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.06 - 07:02PM to say:

I want to enter this! It sounds fun, and it would be my first EVER Challenge! :) I'm very excited. I haven't stopped thinking about it. and, I have a few questions: One- you said the bonus questions have been changed, but where are they? what are the new bonust questions? and Two- what exactly is the prize for the winners? do they just get titled 'best romance' or 'best use of forty-eight hours' ? or anything else? thanks (: ~GMW

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.06 - 07:04PM to say:

babewithbrains - that's a major change I didn't think of. I will say yes. The specifics of who takes whom wasn't the Challenge. It was the 48 hours that they are gone.

Bware0313 came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.06 - 07:17PM to say:

Look at me participating in a challenge!!! Two chapters written, and third on the way! Saw this and plot bunny hopped straight into my head... If only I could write Stag Night like this ;)

Bware0313 came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.06 - 07:18PM to say:

Sir Ollivander, while I'm thinking about it. Does the whole story have to be validated by Apr. 30th? Part of me would prefer not to release the story to the masses before that date.

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.06 - 09:17PM to say:

Bware0313 - the short answer is no. The story does not have to be complete by the deadline, although we highly recommend it. One incomplete story won a category in an earlier Challenge and promptly "completed" the story where it was clearly not finished. The 48 hours does have to be included in the chapters submitted by the deadline. That is the Challenge after all.

Bware0313 came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.06 - 09:59PM to say:

So if the story is not validated by the time it is considered incomplete.

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.06 - 10:51PM to say:

Bware0313 - I think you may be confused between validation and completion.

1) Any story or chapter submitted to be posted on SIYE has to be validated. That means one of our staff archivist reviews the chapter to make sure it meets all of our rules. If it does, the chapter is validated or approved and posted on SIYE for all to read.

2) If the story has multiple chapters, it may not be completed until you submit the last one and check in the story's properties that the story is completed. That is your call. But each chapter still has to go through the validation process to be posted.

You can write a multi-chapter story. As long as the submitted chapters by the deadline meets the Challenge, you're okay. You can submit more chapters after the Challenge is over until you complete the story. I hope that makes more sense.

bnile2010 came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.07 - 01:55AM to say:

Sir Ollivander I am a brand new writer...Who do I submit the story to in order for it to be checked before it gets submitted on the website? Isn't there someone we can send it to for any corrections or anything? Also, I just wanted to say thanks for this site my English writing may be a little rusty but I think I should be ok...Please respond quickly if you can....

HarryGinnyDestiny came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.07 - 08:36AM to say:

"e're pretty loose with the rules. You can change, modify, reword, tweak, alter, vary, adjust, revise (Hermione will love you for that one) and adapt any way you wish." So does that mean we can write it like Molly didn't know anything about Harry and Ginny dating before Harry spilled everything to her? I'm looking forward to seeing any stories where they end up getting married in those 48 hours. That way the reactions of everyone afterwards would be hilarious! :)))

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.07 - 09:13AM to say:

bnile2010-We have a wonderful feature here at SIYE called a Beta Reader Staff. You will find the directory under Extras. I've even retained a position there. We love new writers, and would be glad to assist you and anyone else who needs a small hand with their stories.

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.07 - 09:52AM to say:

HarryGinnyDestiny - er...yes on all counts. What Molly knows, or not, is all up to you.

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.07 - 10:00AM to say:

bnile2010 - Betas are great and we highly recommend any author to use them. Even my stories went through a Beta. But anybody can read your stories before submitting them to SIYE. Friends, schoolmates, parents, teachers, co-workers, etc. I had some college friends read them a few times.

Kezzabear came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.08 - 03:44AM to say:

HarryGinnyDestiny - you're evil. Now I have a crack!fic plot bunny!

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.08 - 08:47AM to say:

Kezzabear - soo...that's gonna be your second story. yes?

HarryGinnyDestiny came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.08 - 05:49PM to say:

"Kezzabear came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.08 - 03:44AM to say: HarryGinnyDestiny - you're evil. Now I have a crack!fic plot bunny" Well that's the kinda fic I'd loooove reading. I'm just bogged down writing my first 3 main HP fanfics, and always told myself I wouldnt do a challenge story until i've got my main ones are out the way. arrgg!!

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.08 - 07:06PM to say:

All - well, it looks like this Challenge shook up some imaginations around here. Maybe we'll get a good turnout this time.

bnile2010 came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.09 - 02:51AM to say:

Spenser Hemmingway I am just making sure can I submit to you a Word doc first and then you convert into this site's format? It seems confusing to me if I were to have more than chapter how to post it I would feel safer if in trusted hands....Thanks I am in middle of writing now....

Kezzabear came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.09 - 07:19AM to say:

I haven't written a first story! My writing's been super!fail of late, we'll see if anything happens at all ... Don't count on *anything*!

lonecall came out of the woodwork on 2010.04.17 - 08:41PM to say:

Sir Olli...I have another couple questions. Is there a minimum length for chapter fics? that is, minimum # of words per chapter? The fic I'm working on seems to be lending itself toward chaptered but the first chapter would only be like...843 (per MS Word word count). Also...do I just submit each chapter as I finish it? or should I hold on and submit them all at the same time?
