Revised Submission Rules
The submission rules have been revised and updated. The changes largely constitute clarifications rather than alterations. However, I would encourage all authors to review the revised rules located ”here.”

As of now, the revised rules are applicable to all future submissions and submissions currently waiting for approval. It is unlikely that stories waiting for approval will be rejected because of the revised rules if they adhered to the old rules in the first place. Stories posted/approved prior to this time are subject to the old submission rules.

We soon expect to revise and clarify the rating system, content warnings for stories, and general site rules. If you wish to make suggestions to contribute to this effort, please contact me via e-mail at president [at] siye.co.uk.

Have a good day-

The rules, clearly, are well-thought out and certainly are the entire right of the site administrators to dictate; in principle, I think all authors can agree with them. However, I have a question about #15: "If your submission is not accepted, you must make at least the changes the archivist has specified before resubmitting. Do not re-submit without making the required changes. We encourage you additionally to take the opportunity to improve your story as far as possible with additional proofreading and editing." I can't speak for anyone else, but I have had stories rejected without a reason being given by the rejecting admin. The general note, "Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar" is not sufficient, IMO, if the story in question does not contain multiple examples of SPaG infractions. If there is something specific in the SPaG of a particular story, only 1 or 2 mistakes, isn't it within the right of the author to expect to be told what, exactly, they must correct in order for their story to be validated? It's frustrating to have to proofread a story for the third or fourth time, guessing at what needs to be corrected in order to be approved for posting. Thanks in advance for commenting/replying! - ReisMacleod

ReisMacleod: That is a good point. If the archivist rejecting a story doesn't specify the problem in a specific enough manner, authors should feel free to respond and ask for clarification. If it is unclear which archivist rejected the story, the author may contact me and I will inquire into the situation. I will remind the archivists to be specific as is reasonably possible when rejecting a story. However- if SPaG errors and the like are quite widespread throughout the submission, the Archivists will not go through and point out each one. I hope this helps-

Absolutely. I agree with everything you said. Thanks for the response!

I commend the site owner and administrators for their efforts to maintain highest standards and quality stories. Because of this, SIYE has some of the most talented fanfic authors, and savvy readers on the web. I have no problems with the rules, but my one question would be what changed? I haven't read the site rules since I joined over a year ago, but I just read the revised rules from the link to see what was new and couldn't tell. - M_And

M_And: We updated the list describing each category with the newer categories and better explanations. The grounds on which a story may be rejected have been clarified in more precise terms. The language has been made more concise. Etc . . .

Four hours (my time) until mid-night premiere! Yippee!

Good job! While the rules was always pretty clear to those who've been around for quite some time, the clarifications will probably make things easier for first-time writers and newcomers. This, of course, I highly laud - we should encourage budding writers.

So the copy/pasting bug couldn't be fixed. How then does the SIYE staff propose we upload stories? Is there a recommended format? Shall we have to type out everything into the box given?

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2009.07.15 - 07:07AM to say:

sapphire200182 - I haven't tried it lately but I use WORD to write my stories. But then I save the document in .RTF format instead of .DOC. It seems to work in the past. Give that a try.

ReisMacleod came out of the woodwork on 2009.07.15 - 01:22PM to say:

Sapphire - Actually, I copy and past from MS Word .DOC files into the box pretty successfully. (Word '04 for Mac) Clearly, I just have to add html italics and what-not at that point.

Perspicacity came out of the woodwork on 2009.07.15 - 01:32PM to say:

I'm happy with the new set of rules. To all who worked on them: nice job!

Many of the confusing ambiguities and inconsistencies have been removed and, most importantly, the administrators have clarified that the over-arching criterion for a story's being published is its alignment with the site's mission. While this implies that acceptance of a story is a judgment call, my experience suggests that it's always been that way--at least now it's explicitly so.

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2009.07.15 - 04:57PM to say:

I'm initiating a loose affiliation these days with a local writers' group here in Oregon. One point that arises, and is extremely clear, is that while the author produces the story, the publisher owns the medium in which it appears. Our site has the final say in regard to what it posts on their site. Disagree? Hmm...you can still establish your own publishing house/web site. This one belongs to Robert.

Please send us your questions, input, and certainly we are interested in your stories.

Perspicacity came out of the woodwork on 2009.07.15 - 05:10PM to say:

Eric, I hope I didn't give the impression that I disagree with the notion that the site owner has the final say. I support this completely.

Rather, my point was that with the earlier rules, there was an expectation that if one complied with the rules, then one's story would be published. This occasionally led to hard feelings when a story that technically satisfied the rules was rejected. With the present rules, this is not a problem, something I consider an improvement.

Tl;dr: Go new rules! :)

I save docx as a htm file and then c&p and that works for me.

sapphire200182 came out of the woodwork on 2009.07.18 - 12:15AM to say:

Thanks for all the ideas. I'll try out the RTF and HTM ideas, seems to be the best for me.

Perspicacity: It's always been a judgement call. You're not the only one who's had fics rejected =(

Perspicacity came out of the woodwork on 2009.07.18 - 10:31AM to say:

The point I'm trying (and obviously failing) to communicate is a philosophical one. Sites like fanfiction.net are compliance driven--they permit essentially everything, provided a story doesn't run counter to the rules. On the other side of the spectrum are invite-only sites like fanficauthors.net, where only select authors may participate. SIYE falls in between, but the rules as they were phrased before led some to believe that the site was closer to fanfiction.net than it was; this led to occasional disappointment and confusion. The new rules are closer to how the site is actually governed, which I see as an improvement.

I'll shut up now, since I'm obviously not making my point clear.

Perspicacity: If it's any consolation, I knew what you were trying to say all along.
