Comments apollo13 came out of the woodwork on 2009.04.07 - 01:13PM to say: Perhaps change or modify the rule that says that you're not allowed to have one-shots where Harry/Ginny die? I can understand why this is put into place, but when I first joined here I submitted one that it most definately Harry/Ginny, and not *totall* obvious that Harry is dead, and it got rejected because of this rule. I think it should be at a mod's discrection whether the fic is spamming or ship-hating, and whether a fic is simply just quite sad. And my fic wasn't even that sad, it was accepting, but it didn't show any other ships. It just seems a bit of a redundant and pointless rule to me, because ship-bashing people wouldn't really come on this site, and even if they did, it's quite easy to tell if they are deliberately spamming, because usually their stories/messages are in caps lock and have appalling grammar. :P ~Evie Meds came out of the woodwork on 2009.04.07 - 02:13PM to say: there are authors out there who really get descriptive about death sex etc. maybe for them we should have another rating called MA-17. i feel that being super descritive is the only way you can truly convey what you are saying. thanks alot. Meds(tyler) Perspicacity came out of the woodwork on 2009.04.08 - 01:49AM to say: A few more comments on the rules: Rule 18: Typo: "you'd" should be "you've" Rule 20: Typo: "you" should be "your". Under "Entries not allowed," rule 4 has a typo: 'acception' should be 'exception'; 'Again' in that sentence be followed by a comma. Under "Entries not allowed," number 7 would benefit from clarification. Should I assume that if I were to write porn, but if it did have a plot (e.g., a Harry/Ginny story alone the lines of cloneserpents's "Harry Potter and the Sword of Gryffindor"), that it be welcome? Likely not (aside from the fact that I am constitutionally incapable of writing porn). Perhaps this could be rephrased as "Please note that stories deemed to contain excessive amounts of smut are considered NC-17, even in an instance where the language makes it technically an R rating." There is no need for the follow-on sentence. I propose (if it's not too much trouble to code) that you allow the 1k words/entry rule to be relaxed in the case of epilogues or prologues to multi-chaptered stories. Sometimes a short epilogue/prologue set apart from the main body works better in a stylistic sense than affixing the bit to the end/beginning of the final/first chapter. While I appreciate the gentility, I recommend that you lose instances of 'please' in the rules; rather, phrase the rules as imperatives. ('Please' sounds as if the rules are optional). All references to "I" in the rules should be replaced with "the staff." kingbobrules came out of the woodwork on 2009.04.08 - 03:07PM to say: Generally, the rules embody the spirit of SIYE and make good sense in my opninion. However, they are not very easy to find on the site - perhaps they could be clearly linked from the home page? Also, all of the rules are related to submitting stories, not posting reviews or contacting other members. A common sense rule about being polite etc. might be a good idea? Also, the rules about PWP implies that porn with plot is welcome on SIYE... Surely, sexually explicit scenes that constitute pornography don't come under the R rating umbrella anyway? The R rating generally seems to encmpass a huge range of language, imagery and levels of explisitness - I'm not sure if this belongs in rules or somewhere else, but it seems that some more clarification is needed on the difference between a PG-13 and an R, and an R and 'not on this site please', valondon came out of the woodwork on 2009.04.13 - 06:44AM to say: The rule about your story has to have atleast 1000 words to be submitted. I think that a prolouge should be allowed to be less then 1000 words. I also think that this rule shouldn't even be in place and the person checking a submission should decide if the chapter is long enough. 700 words in a chapter isn't going to hurt anyone. amblewat came out of the woodwork on 2009.04.14 - 09:31PM to say: I agree that excessively promiscuous needs to be a bit more detailed. GinnyMarie came out of the woodwork on 2009.04.15 - 12:24PM to say: I think that perhaps the last rule in the 'General Submissions' part, rule 22, could be revised. What I mean is, no reference to alcohol? Or drugs? On the whole, these are teenagers. Teenagers experiment, even JKR's. I don't think it would be...unacceptable to have maybe, some instances of alcohol, and to a lesser extent, drug usage, as long as it is not overt. For example: Ron, while underage, gets a hold of some Firewhiskey, or something along those lines, and starts passing it around. Every teen, or at least a large majority of them, at least wants to try stuff once. As long as we don't make them alcoholics (except under maybe extreme circumstances, such as a traumatic event) or druggies, I think maybe it should be accepted. So revision of this rule is my suggestion. Otherwise, as far as rule's go, I don't think there are any changes really. However, maybe a crack down on the standard of writing is needed on SIYE. Some stories, no offense to their authors, lack substance, and good writing. rbackwards2 came out of the woodwork on 2009.04.15 - 05:25PM to say: One of the guidelines for entries states, "No 'chat room' entries where the story is depicted using chat room talk. I can't see Harry on the net anytime soon. So sorry. " I'm not planning on writing one of these ever, but I've read at least one that was well-conceived and funny. Does this mean that you don't want "kthxbye" and so on, or merely that you don't like the format? (It strikes me that a deluge of these kinds of stories would be irritating to wade through, but that the device in and of itself is harmless - for instance, if it's told as Ministry interoffice memos or patronuses or something. Anyway, just wondering. harmoine came out of the woodwork on 2009.04.16 - 07:05PM to say: The only thing that I can suggest is that a rating of NC - 17 be introduced. With this rating it allows writers to go into more depth of details for when it comes to writing more adult themes in the story line. What I mean is that the author can write more graphical things in sex scenes, battle scenes and what forth. I am sure but not fully confident that there are some authors here that would greatly appreciate the high rating for the work that they do and at the same time the readers sometimes wish that there was more details in the scenes as well. On another note with regards to this topic I would recommend that SIYE place a high security device on the high rated stories. An example of this is that when someone clicks on the story they either have to enter there date of birth that allows them to read the story or click on Yes I am over 18 years of age or No I am under the legal age and when they click that button it takes them back to the home page. With each option they both have a flaw because underage people can either make up a birthday or simply click yes. However if underage people did do that and if they got caught then they are the only ones to be blamed because SIYE gave the necessary warnings that needed to be given out. Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2009.04.19 - 08:55PM to say: Dianne came out of the woodwork on 2009.04.19 - 06:33PM to say: I for one would like to see the site updated as a whole. I think it is by far the best HP fanfic site already but a few other categories wouldn't hurt. Might freshen things up. I know that cross overs make most people roll their eyes but if they are put in a category off by themselves, eye rollers wouldn't have to read them but they would be available. Rules that keep to the standard of the site could still be in place, such as Harry has to be with Ginny etc but it would open up a bit of wiggle room story wise. I like that SIYE is what it is, a devoutly H/G site and that could be upheld. If cross overs were in a separate category, they wouldn't take away from the site, but yes, eye rollers, there are other sites for that sort of thing, but it might be nice to see it here too. Or not. It's all good either way. I just think a fresh idea would be nice. Again, the site is great as it stands and I still love it. This is just my thought, no beatings please. Duelist came out of the woodwork on 2009.04.24 - 06:09PM to say: I hope that NC17 is either not introduced here, or that parents have to approve access. One of the things that I like on this site is that I (mostly) don't have to worry if my kids want to read with me. I think that there are plenty of places to go on the net where you can read that kind of stuff. One of the things, to me, that makes this site such a high-quality one is that the standards of submission and content exist, are accepted by most, and are enforced when violated. yanmaneee came out Perspicacity came out of the woodwork on 2009.04.06 - 03:22AM to say:
A few suggestions:
Rule 2: Define what "excessively promiscuous" means, since this means different things to different people. Can Ginny have had any prior physical relationship with someone not named Harry? Arguably, these rules should be different for different time periods. Any sexual activity whatsoever by a twelve year old girl strikes me as far more shocking than consensual behavior among twenty-five-year-olds, for example.
Rule 13 has a typo: 'and' should be 'an'.
Rules 17 and 18 should be merged for economy. (Do people really write in alternative caps?)
Rule 21 under "submission rules" doesn't belong. It should go in a separate section regarding rules for comments.
Rule 22 should be modified. I can point a dozen stories in the archives that have main characters drinking alcohol. (Heck, SSHenry's stories have Ginny getting drunk at age 4). I fail to see why this is even a problem if the characters are over the age of majority. I know of an instance where a story was rejected in part not because a character used cocaine, but because a muggle doctor suspected it when a character fell into a seizure. I propose this rule be reworded: "Stories may not reference or imply that characters are using illegal drugs or engage in underage drinking; this is particularly true for the main characters."
