In Memory of Jaquelyne Hawkins 1973-2006

It is with a heavy heart that I report the passing of one of our own, Jaquelyne Hawkins. Jaq, or Billie to her closer family and friends, was one of the first senior administrators when Sink Into Your Eyes website was created in 2003. She was in charge of Archivists, or Moderators as they were called back then.

Jaq was a 33 year-old sports journalist/reporter for a Chicago (USA) newspaper. One of her last assignments was covering Tiger Woods playing in the British Open Golf Tournament. I reminded her to use a warming charm, as it was windy and cool on the golf course.

18 months ago, she was hit hard with a medical condition that almost killed her. She did lose her eyesight for a long time. Little by little, her doctors determined what hit her and she started to recover. However, her eyesight was never going to be better than about 65%. She was well enough to live at home for the past nine months or so. Her mum, Pat, helped her in reading stories and other news from SIYE. They even judged some Challenges together. We were all waiting for the day she could return to us and resume her position at SIYE.

Saturday morning (Dec. 2), very unexpectedly, Jaq followed James & Lily and Sirius in what Professor Dumbledore called the next great adventure. SIYE has expressed their sincerest sympathies and condolences to her mum. On behalf of SIYE, a flower arrangement has been sent via her mum in memory of Jaq. For those of us that knew her and corresponded with her, she will be sorely missed. I hope there is a Flourish & Blotts in heaven so she can read the last Harry Potter book when it comes out.

Her mum said Billie wanted to be cremated and have her ashes spread either in Paris, France, or her grandfatherâ€™s farm. Her ashes will be spread over the farm in the spring (Illinois?)

The December Engagement Challenge was her idea to get some of her friends back into writing. She was a big fluff enthusiast.

Jaqulyne Hawkings was the Person who first proposed to me to become an archivist at this site. During my time under Her she was kind, funny, and we corresponded almost daily. we also had a lot of fun teasing her Husband while we chatted. I became her second in Command sometimes when she had to go on Assignment and this eventually brought me to the admin of Author relations and content position. I am now the Assistant Head Administrator to this site, all because Jaquelyne encouraged me to start as an Archivist. When Jaquelyne was hit with her Sickness it devastated me. we could no longer correspond every other day like we used to. Pat, my thoughts go out to you. Please accept my deepest Condolences, and be Glad that while Jaquelyne was alive, she touched the heart of all who knew her. and in those hearts, mine included, she shall live on Forever.

Being in the mid-west myself. I had a good deal in common already with Jaq. We used to talk about SIYE and her job, back in 2003-2004 when I was just the host for SIYE. I liked hearing about the day-to-day grind of the Chi-Town sports beat, and her stories of who she had met along the way.

She had a wonderful personality, and could make you smile with her whimsical sense of humor. Her works as an author are among the best in the HG Fiction realm. In-fact her works are some of the 1st for HG that were ever posted to SIYE. Bedtime Stories, while sadly never finished is a classic in itâ€™s own right and is well loved and known by all serious HG shippers.

When she fell ill, I was heart broken, and now at this time I have a mix of great sadness, and heartfelt joy. Sad because a friend is gone, but joy because she was, and still is loved by all who knew her. I was one of the lucky ones, and it gives me joy to know that.

It's sad whenever anyone dies, especially somone who was so young. I hope she's in a better place and I know she's watching everyone who knew and loved her and smiling. It's is true that our loved ones never leave us - they live forever in our hearts. It's not the exact quote from the story, but to me it's one of the truest lines in the Harry Potter stories. I never knew Jaq. I had become aware of fanfiction around the time she fell ill and joined the staff here half a year later. I never had a conversation with her and I doubt she ever knew my name. But she was so well-spoken of amongst the more senior staff. If there was one person who was idolised more or held in better esteem, I never knew of him/her.

The knowledge I have of Jaq was mostly gleaned from things told to me by other members of the SIYE staff and from the emails that Pat sent to Sir Ollivander, and which he relayed to us all.

I never knew her. I'd always hoped to meet her one day, if... when she could rejoin us here. I regret now, more than ever before, that I was never given that chance.

Once I heard about this from Melindaleo's mailing list, I was sad. I've never met her, and I only first heard of her a few months after I joined SIYE. I'm not very active on this site, but even so, I do check the comments/posts every now and then and have always found the updates on Jaq interesting. She sounds like a wonderful person to be around, and I can't imagine how hard it must be to lose someone so close to the heart, from what I gather in these comments.

For me, December 2nd is a day filled with losses. My grandmother passed away nine years ago on 12/2, and our pet bird died seven years ago on 12/2. Jaq didn't visit Requiem very much, but I do remember a debate we were having once, and she chimed in with some really good points. I remember how friendly and helpful she was...she had funny stories, like the time she debated H/Hr vs H/G with a friend of hers. When I first started poking around the site last fall, Jaq had already fallen ill, and I wondered about this young woman who was clearly so valued and respected by the staff and authors. From the bit of story I gleaned from the updates, I admired the bond that clearly existed between Jaq and Pat and that Jaq could still experience SIYE through her momâ€™s eyes and voice. I always noticed whenever I saw a review from Jacsmompat, and it did my heart good knowing that the two of them were still reading and enjoying HP fluff despite Jaqâ€™s difficulties. I finally read a few of her stories a few months ago and enjoyed them immensely. She was quite adept at her fluff which will live on for new H/G shippers to find year after year. I am so sorry to hear of her death. My condolences and prayers are with Pat, the rest of Jaquelyneâ€™s family, and to those around the site that clearly loved her.
