Fantastic job people! I didn't even try last month with a Humor entry. I helped my wife grade some of her students' mathematics assignments, and... Well, it is good that I have medical benefits that covers barin injuries. No Hermione, I wrote my Challenge story first. Christmas is coming. What can we produce? Eric B.

Congratulations to all who were nominated and more importantly to those who won. I would like to congratulate Chreechree on an amazing showing, especially for her first story. Intromit and fake a smile, I quite glad to see both of you in the winner's circle so to speak. My two favorite authors both doing quite well.... I'm proud of you both.

Thank you all for your continued support. It still blows my mind that Taking Control has been so well received, and I truly appreciate all the reviews, nominations, and votes I have received. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees; there were a lot of great stories in there. And thank you all again.

Congratulations to all the winners and the nominees. It's nice to see so many wonderful stories being recognized. Thanks for all the tremendous support on TSH. I'm sad to have it ending, but honored that it's been so well received. Thanks so very much.

Sovran came out of the woodwork on 2006.11.08 - 11:15AM to say:

Wow! Thanks so much to everyone who voted for my stories. I'm completely floored. I'm still amazed to have won Best One Shot when the competition was so close and the competitor was so wonderful.

Also, I think we should all congratulate SIYE itself. This round of the DSTA got many more overall votes than any previous month, which shows how SIYE is growing in size and popularity. Kudos to the admins for guiding that growth so effectively.

well done to all the winners and good luck to all the authors for next months awards

Jim McGuffin came out of the woodwork on 2006.11.08 - 11:47PM to say:

Congrats to all the Silver Trinket winners. But I'd like to add my own two Knuts on the awards system. I am a math major, and so I understand the rather complex formula used to determine the nominees. But when I see a complex formula used to determine rankings, I am immediately reminded of a similar controversial ranking system, namely the BCS computer system used to determine the top two teams in college football in the USA. I admit that sometimes even I get tired of seeing the same fics win all the time. But I don't think that the formula is the way to solve it. I'm glad that there is now a One-Shot category, and the Comedy category also helps new authors since pure comedies tend to be shorter. But I don't think that an author should be penalized just because their fic is long. I wonder whether there is some way to simplify the formula a bit. One poster earlier suggested that perhaps the number of votes could be based on the chapter, not the fic, but that might lead to authors updating only once a month in order to gain many votes for that chapter. And as already pointed out, someone could simply nominate his or her own fic in an off-category (such as a Angsty fic in Comedy or Romance) in order to gain the new nomination bonus. I suppose the best solution is probably to limit how often a fic can be nominated. The big prizes, after all, are the annual Trinkets, not the monthly awards. Correct me if I'm wrong, but all the monthly winners compete against one another for the annual awards, right? Then just limit the number of times in a year the fic can win a monthly award. Such a fic would not be penalized because it would still be in the running for the yearly award, and now the formula is no longer complicated. Once again congrats to all the winners and good luck to one and all in November!

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2006.11.10 - 12:27AM to say:

Jim, since you are a mathematics major, I am probably going to refer my wife to you when she gets frustrated with my writing (her Master's theisis was on theoretical topology, which I understand is three-dimensional mathematics). Your argument is sound, and I hope that it is well-considered. I myself am very right-brain, and so I will just write for a little while longer, appreciate any nomination that comes along, and hope that maybe somebody somewhere will read and enjoy my works. Eric B.

Chreechree came out of the woodwork on 2006.11.11 - 06:20AM to say:

Congratulations to all the winners! Iā€™m so proud of cwarbeck, Sovran, and fake a smile as they continue to garner such well deserved praise (no disrespect to intromit and melindaleo, but the other three are my buddies). I was so pleased to be nominated. Thanks RubysQuill and Sovran for your kind words above.

lecook4 came out of the woodwork on 2006.11.11 - 12:02PM to say:

Jim, I just want to clear up one thing, when I said the judging should be on each chapter, it didn't mean authors would want to submit less. They would each just simply be voted on their merits per chapter not combined together. You could still submit as many chapters as you wanted. The only difference from the way it is being done now, is that the total votes wouldn't be combined and attached to the whole story. It would make each chapter compete on its own merits in the categories that each chapter was best suited. Not every chapter is the same and yet with this current system, they are all being lumped together for a monthly total. It doesn't preclude entering one a week as they would all stand the same chance as any other submission.

Enough said about the rules of the awards here. This particular forum is for the winners and I would like to congratulate all of them for stories well done. They all deserved an award.

fake a smile came out of the woodwork on 2006.11.11 - 01:30PM to say:

lecook4, I think what Jim was worried about was that authors would not want to submit more than one chapter per month, and thus end up competeing against themselves in the polls. The author who submits five chapters in a month will have all his votes split between those five chapters whereas the author who only submits one chapter will have all his votes going to that one chapter, giving the latter author a much better shot at winning. I'll not get into anything else here; I just felt the need to clarify what I believe was Jim's worry.
