Quality and Rules issues
The quality of stories at SIYE is always one of our main concerns, which is why we have a staff to read over your submission to catch as many problems as possible before posting your story to the archive. However, it is not the Archivist’s job to correct your spelling errors. It should be as close to perfect as possible before you submit it. We have asked repeatedly for each author to find a Beta to help him or her. Therefore, I have sent an email to the SIYE Staff that if your story contains ANY canon spelling errors or more than 3-5 general spelling errors, they are to send your story back and remove it from the validation queue.

Furthermore, your story's title must be properly cased - which only means that you capitalize the words. For example: harry potter and the properly cased title. should be, Harry Potter and the Properly Cased Title. Quite simple really.

I have also seen an explosion of authors using HTML code in their summary. Rule # 9 under Submission Rules is as follows:

9. HTML codes, images and links to other sites are not allowed in your summary. Unfortunately, the script lets them by. Please note that if we find them, we will delete them without notification.

This rule is self-explanatory. Your summary cannot contain images, banners or any computer code for italics, bold, underlining, centering, or blank lines. Essentially, we will remove formatting of any kind.

It has also been brought to my attention that authors are adding links to their blogs, web-pages and other sites. Unfortunately, SIYE has no control over where these links might take an unsuspecting reader. One such link took the reader to a home decorating store, but it could have just as easily been somewhere unsavoury. Therefore, without notification, SIYE staff will remove links embedded in your title, summary and author’s notes or within the story. The only place where you can put images, banners or links is on your bio page. If you would like to invite your fans to discuss your story at another site, that is the place for the link, not within your story.

As always, we are happy to post your stories and will gladly help any author or reader that asks for assistance. You can reach me at the following email addresses.

Thank you for making this so clear. It's very helpful. I, for one, appreciate all SIYE does to protect the integrity of this site. Thanks.

It's great to see these efforts continuing. This is why SIYE's general quality is so much higher than that of most sites. If you find that you need more validation readers (or whatever you call them officially), send out the word. I would be willing to help, and I know of a couple of other authors that probably would, too. Great work! Dave

Much like Sovran, I would also volunteer my time and energy if you need it. I've noticed a pretty high variability in the quality of work out there, which is why I only post on SIYE and mostly only read stories here. I very much appreciate the efforts of the admins and validators and like here. If I can contribute to the overall effort, please do let me know. Thanks for your hard work.

I am very glad to see all the positive comments about what we are talking about here. For those few who do not like our overseeing submissions, please remember that the standards are even tighter for publishing something professionally, and even in college for that matter. We have some great stories posted here. Let's have some more that are just as good-looking. Thanks! Eric B.

I am very glad that SIYE is reinforcing these rules! This is one of the only sites I will go to anymore, because unlike the larger Harry Potter fan fiction sites, the writing isn't deteriorating--or rather, I've noticed a growing deterioration, but hopefully this will keep that from coming up! I'd gladly help out around here too, but, as I'm already a beta for new authors, I'm too busy and, I think I'm already helping in some small way. Three cheers for whomever created this new rule!

I would suggest that if they are not sure on a Canon spelling then they should go to http://hp-lexicon.org/index-2.html It is the best site ever and JK herself uses it to check up on things when she can't remember.

Excellent point. I have a degree in English and when I come upon spelling error after spelling errow, it akes away from my enjoyment of the story and I usually just stop reading. Well put and thank you.

SilverPhoenix - Technically it's not a new rule, just a reminder. Because it's very nice when everybody remembers--staff and authors.

It's good you put this up, people are messing up the spelling and casing of titles badly.

emily0403 came out of the woodwork on 2006.08.16 - 03:07AM to say:

Thanks for reminding authors of these things! There are good stories on this site and thats why I come here, but there are some that need grammar work and I either don't read them or do my best to ignore it. And I've been tossing a fic idea around in my head because I have never seen an H/G fic with the theme and if I do write it I'll be sure to keep all the rules in mind.
