The Geek Rants and Raves!
Some of you may notice that there is a new box. Browser Certified. This means that the browser listed has been tested and found working for the entirety of the site. As browsers are tested their logo will appear in that box so you have a reference as to what browsers are supported on SIYE.

Solved Issue

The issue I had with missing and dropped stories on the site is solved. The issue now is to address IE display issues. As some may notice the news text is fixed, as well as the notice of an error in IE when you open the site.
It will take some time to hammer all of the issues IE has out but it will be finished soon. If you have Issues to report, with IE please goto the help desk.

New Member Tool!

There is a new tool for members. The name is Action Log. To use it, log in as a member and click "Account Info" or "Your Account" in the login box. What you use it for is information. It will show any action taken on your stories by yourself or the staff, and allow you to track what was done and when. If a story or chapter was rejected, and deleted it will show by who. If it was edited but you didn't do it, it will show who did. I thought it cool to allow registered members limited access to the same log tool that the admin staff uses.

Thanks!

"Head Geek" whom we all love dearly! Thank you so much for all your hard work Steve!

Awww *blush* I'm jsut a lil 'ole geek if I dotn work hard at something, then it wouldnt get done.

Grimmrook came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.04 - 11:44AM to say:

Thank you for your hard work, oh grand head geek. I did, however, want to bring up one small thing that I think one person did bring up in a previous comment thread, and that was the issue of story reads. Just wanted to know if it's just me,or if no one is getting a read count, or if that was a problem, etc. You know where I'm going with it. Other than that, so far everything's pretty great. Oh, wait, I had another question. Is there an easy way to make already existing stories into a series? Am I being dumb and not reading instructions I should be? Okay, now I think I'm done. If I'm being an idiot about either issue, please feel free to tell me in the most humiliating way possible, I can take it.

AdminQ came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.04 - 01:59PM to say:

LOL, no your not an ID10T but I would advise for the time being to refrain from making a new series. At the moment its 50-50 at best you dont looste your data. As for the word count, aka reads I have but 3 letters...F-A-Q :-) - Steve

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.04 - 02:50PM to say:

For some reason the people that read my stories send me more letters than reviews (I didn't know that you could send email written in crayon). One of them pointed out that since she wasn't a member, and couldn't log in, she wasn't able to leave a review. Naturally, I suggested her becoming a member, but for those that don't listen to me...will they be able to review? Thanks. Eric.

Grimmrook came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.04 - 03:37PM to say:

And all my questions are answered. Thanks, Q.

AdminQ came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.04 - 06:18PM to say:

Spencer, if they dont register, they will not be able to leave a review. I dis allow annon reviews, because if you want to comment, then you need to sign it. I may track IP's and other information to catch spam, but for the author, I think it best to see a name.

AdminQ came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.04 - 06:18PM to say:

btw, your welcome Grimmrook

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.04 - 08:47PM to say:

That was exactly what I hoped you would say. If someone doesn't want to go public then they can email me off-line. Thanks for the information. Eric B.

brittpinkie came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.05 - 01:51PM to say:

Also, I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but I'm not receiving e-mails when I get a new review. I have this option checked on my account info, and I used to get them at the old site, but I haven't since we changed... Besides that, great work on the page, Mr. "head geek" ;)

I'll take it upon myself to say that all the challenge entries are do in ten days. I wonder if anyone is even typing one, no submissions and very few people saw the challenge post.

Exile250 came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.05 - 05:35PM to say:

Backgrounds are a little annoying. I know several people who try to change them only to have them revert back after 10 minutes

AdminQ came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.05 - 06:19PM to say:

brittpinkie Each day I get bounced email reports, Mostly because of the mail box not being there, and others because the ISP blocks this sites notice emails as spam. Check spam folders, etc and open a helpdesk issue with me about it.

Exile250 I'm lost by what you mena with the backgrounds. The CSS code is teiing the browser to use what ever color picked for the theme, it reverts back to the default because the session for the user has expired, and they mostlikely need to log back in.

Works in progress and gremlins people! As one of my communications people, SGT Troy [Harry] Potter once told us, "Patience is a virtue, but no one seems to be virtuous when the system gets sick." I personally think that under the circumstances everything is going great. Incidentally, my Challenge story is in editing. Virtue friends...virtue, and immense appreciation to AdminQ. Eric B.

Grimmrook came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.05 - 11:37PM to say:

Hey, super patient over here. Actually, considering that I haven't started posting my next story, and my last story is relatively old by now, I've got nothing to be impatient about. Still, there is one other little glitch that I found, and just wanted to bring to light if no one else has (I bet I missed a message somewhere proving me to be a moron). Anyway, when I go into my account, under "Favorite Author" it lists "3 members". When I click on 3 members, however, only two names pop up. Incredibly minor, yes, but I want to help (and I'm procrastinating on my current story).

brittpinkie came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.06 - 04:07AM to say:

Yeah, the same thing happened with me. The number of people actually on my list was a lot smaller than the number that I really have (and I remember from the old site). Also, one of the members is just missing...his name is Jordon, and I know he didn't withdraw his membership, but I can't find him anywhere :( Anyway, I'm pretty patient too...just wanted to let you know about the few glitches left asap, so the site will be perfect.

PhoenixAeternum came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.06 - 06:14AM to say:

I am more or less inactive as far as posting here goes, and will be for awhile longer, but I'm experiencing similar problems. I'm listed as having fifty-seven people with me as a favourite (don't hurt me-- I'm just luck!), but only four show up. Really not pressing in the least, but something to mention at any rate. Lead us to the light, O Eric of Virtue!

Grimmrook came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.06 - 09:14AM to say:

Yeah, and I haven't had a review in ages... Wait, that's probably not a bug... shoot.

LadyLatina came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.06 - 09:30AM to say:

Hello. I was wondering what happened to the A/N? Where are they? It is missing from my latest chapter. Also, are we not going to be able to see how many times our stories have been read? I kinda miss that too. Just wondering. Thanks!

bibliophile19 came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.06 - 12:27PM to say:

just one other--minor--bug: is anyone getting emails for reviews? Because I'm not. It was nice, though, coming to check on the site and finding 13 new reviews... :)

AdminQ came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.06 - 12:59PM to say:

Grimmrook: Remove them and re-add them. This is a glitch addressed in the FAQ. Only your issue is rare, and wasnt fully addressed, I thought I got the 12 or so accounts I found with this issue.

PhoenixAeternum: This issue is unknown to me. Well spoted. From looking at the code, and database, it appears to be the same issue as the fav author. Oh the joy of making 2 seperate set's of code merge into one site.

LadyLatina: If there is an author note listed in the start of a chapter, then it should show up. I tested this on the test site, and it works. I'll check the site code here in a few to see if its written over here. The FAQ talks about story views, and why they are missing.

bibliophile19: The emails are going out, I see them each day. Check your Spam folders, and junk mail boxes. Several ISP's are sending me notices about bounced mail because they think it is spam. Before too long I will have to make a list, of ISP's who are being a pain in my backside over this.

bibliophile19: I just looked, yout ISP is one of those that says the domain was removed from the spam list, but still blocks it.

Grimmrook came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.06 - 01:30PM to say:

Actually, my problem is the exact same as Phoenix's. I guess I wasn't clear, but then, the idea that anyone would list me as a favorite is a little far out there.

AdminQ came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.06 - 01:40PM to say:

If there is a issue, no matter how small, please open a help desk ticket, it helps me track things.

brittpinkie came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.06 - 02:16PM to say:

bibliophile, the same thing happened to me, and I checked last night in my spam and there were my notices. Just click the "not spam" button and you'll get them in your inbox- it worked fine for me. Also, I've been having the same problem with the favortie authors thing....I'm supposed to have 17, but only 6 are listed. AND, the authors note feature wasn't working when I posted my story either.

bibliophile19 came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.06 - 04:17PM to say:

ah; I see. Thanks!

AdminQ came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.07 - 03:24AM to say:

ATTN: Anyone who used excite.com for email, and bellsouth.net you will have issues getting mail. These providers run some sort of sick, spam blocker, that doesnt block on spam, but what could be spam. The emails from the site, because they have links in them, and are addressed to your username, and not the name of the email account, are blocked or bounced. You may want to use a different email account fro email from this site.. PS Author Note issue solved.

LMAO!!

DQBunny came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.09 - 07:09PM to say:

The only issue I ever had was with submitting stories through Safari, but I haven't tried under version 2.0 yet. I really do like the Action Log. I think maybe it'll eliminate a lot of the traffic coming to y'all on "where's my story" or "what happened to my story" as well.

Grand Poobah came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.13 - 04:09PM to say:

I have no experience with the "old system" but I have found a couple issues or questions with the current version of efiction. If I paste the text to a chapter and then go through to edit in the html, frequently it will just truncate the chapter at some point. As a result of this, the chapter needs to be deleted, however, when I choose "delete" as an option, it will always generate an error. The deletion is completed, but the return is to an error screen. The only option I have found is to put in the entire chapter in just text and save it. Then edit the chapter and add a little of the html at a time, saving the work after no more than a few codes. This seems to work, although it is very time consuming. Thank you.

PhoenixAeternum came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.13 - 09:00PM to say:

I suggest you use whatever word processor you normally use and put the html codes in there, then transfer it to a plain text document. You can simply load it up off of your computer. It's what I do, and it's much, much easier. By the way, I'm a fan.

Grand Poobah came out of the woodwork on 2006.04.14 - 12:49AM to say:

I appreciate the feedback, however, efiction will not allow that at all. I've tried more than a dozen different word processors, and "cut and pasted" in a complete variety of formats, even just plain text. None of them work. efiction is simply very particular about certain things...for example, you can't paste a Word document. And you can't include the word "curl" in your story.
