The Cost of Everything Challenge (2015-3)

During a visit to Gringotts Bank, the Potter account manager requested a meeting with Harry.  The Goblin asked why he was paying twice the amount of other students attending Hogwarts.  Was he getting extra education, better accommodations, etc?  Harry didn't know so he asked how much does everything cost for what he was being taught.  Misunderstanding Harry, the manager said he would send him all the material within the week.  Harry started to receive numerous Hogwarts documents and the cost of education the average person was not meant to see or learn of.

The Challenge is to write a story concerning Harry receiving all this material explaining what is supposed to be taught, qualifications, costs, salaries, and everything you can think of that he shares with all the students.  Also, why didn't the non-purebloods receive the student handbook at the beginning of each year, costing them 7 galleons.  Kind of expensive for a book you didn't get.

Rules:

1. All general submission rules apply. Stories over 20,000 words are discouraged but not prohibited.  R-rated stories are allowed but discouraged. Judges are not required to read stories over 20,000 words or any R-rated stories.

2. All entries must be submitted under The Cost of Everything Challenge (2015-3) sub-category of SIYE Challenges and be submitted by midnight SIYE Time, Saturday, August 15, 2015.

3. Only completed stories will be accepted.  Multiple chapters are allowed as long as all the requirements are in the chapters and the story is completed by the deadline.  All stories still go through the same approval process as normal submissions.  Please don't wait till the last minute.

4. The categories for judging are Best Overall, Most Discombobulated, Most Revealing, and The People’s Choice Award.

I would like to thank my many judges who worked hard for this Challenge.  Thank you AM, EB, NS, SM & ZA.  You know who you are.  Thank you very much for all that reading and judging.  Your time to help out is quite valuable. The Challenge would not exist if nobody judged them.  Also, 36 votes were cast for The People’s Choice Award.

Some authors have asked if I would tell them how well they did in the judging.  If you wish, e-mail me and I will tell you your results.  Please state which story is yours.

The Portraits Challenge Update #2

Returning to the Common Room late one evening from the kitchens by way of one of the hidden passageways, Harry asks one of the portraits he's gotten to know well if there  were more secret passageways that nobody remembers.

"You know, there are eleven ways out of the castle.  I believe you know of four of them.  Three may have been closed or collapsed." the portrait replied.

"Eleven!  I've heard of seven.  And yes, four are unusable." Harry exclaimed.

"Well, there's the Shrieking Shack one, the one to that chocolate store in town, the one to the back side of the lake, the troop entrance on the other side of the mountain, the chamber one I think you found, and..."

"Wait. the troop entrance?  That one I haven't heard of.  Or at least by that name."

"Yes.  During war times when the castle was under assault, troops and supplies came through from the other side of the mountain through a hidden passage through the old storage rooms, weapons room and the sleeping quarters.  If you go to the second floor, there's a large closet where the wall moves away, down a long flight of stairs..."

"A weapons room?"

"Oh, yes.  That's where the troops lived and trained.  There's a whole compound set up for 500 men to live and train."

So what do you want to learn about Hogwarts castle?  I'm sure there's plenty more to discover.  You just have to write about them.

The Portraits Challenge Update #1

On a not so late Thursday evening, Harry was again sitting in an unused classroom.  But this time he had an audience of seven portraits in four frames holding a very informal discussion of who knows what.

"For instance," one older lady stated.  "On Thursday nights like tonight, when the staff have their weekly meetings, Mr. Filch always neglects to patrol the fifth floor and above.  He works the fourth floors down to his quarters where he retires for the evening.  Such information could save that young Miss Brown's reputation.  There are more broom closets than the one she favors on the third floor.  She and her current beau missed being caught after curfew by a mere one minute the other night."

"So what locations would you recommend for say, a young, upstanding couple to spend some private time together?" Harry thought out loud.

"Not that you have ever taken advantage of any," an elderly gentleman replied.  "But there are a few long forgotten stowage rooms on the seventh floor that are never checked by the staff or the prefects.  They are quite more comfortable than a cramped broom closet, if you know what I mean."

There were a few comments from the other portraits concerning the gentleman's response.  Some agreed, some were surprised, and one couple appeared to be blushing.

Harry thought of having a quick but private conversation with Lavender when he returned to the Common Room later.  No reason for loosing house points unnecessarily.

What do you think you could or would want to learn from the Hogwarts experts?  Write it down and submit your entry to the Challenge.

The Portraits Challenge (2015-2)

After brooding around, Harry Potter ended up looking out a dirty window in an unused room in some unknown part of the castle.  He was startled when he heard a voice close by say, “Hello?”  A portrait that had seen better days started a conversation with him.  Harry shortly learned that the vast majority of the portraits at Hogwarts are neglected and abandoned.  Keeping up conversations, Harry became the most popular person the portraits wanted to talk to.

The portraits know every square inch of the castle, where everybody and everything is, what everybody is saying, what they’re doing, and with whom.  Within a month, Harry became the most informed person in the castle.  Nothing was sacred.

The Challenge is to write a story of how this came about, what all information Harry can and did gain from the portraits, and how he uses this information to his advantage.

Rules:

1. All general submission rules apply. Stories over 20,000 words are discouraged but not prohibited.  R-rated stories are allowed but discouraged. Judges are not required to read stories over 20,000 words or any R-rated stories.

2. All entries must be submitted under “The Portraits” Challenge 2015-2, sub-category of SIYE Challenges and be submitted by midnight SIYE Time, Friday, May 15, 2015.

3. Only completed stories by the deadline are acceptable.  Multiple chapters are allowed.

4. The categories for judging are Best Overall, Most Resourceful, Adventurous, and The People’s Choice Award.

Harry and Ginny's lives have finally evened out. They've faced trauma, and loss, more than most have, but they've fought hard to find a normal. If only things could stay that way... Old enemies find new ways to seek revenge. This story is the sequel to Bound. It would be extremely helpful if you read that first. Warnings are to be safe. It's probably overkill. Trix by GHL (PG-13)
** Winner of the DSTA for Best New Story **
"But now old friends are acting strange..." -- Joni MitchellVoldemort is dead; Harry and Ginny are in love and living the dream. What's not to like, right? Then, a sudden rash of strange incidents piques Harry's anxiety. After years of war, are people just having difficulty adjusting to peace? Or is someone nasty pulling dirty 'trix'?The story is set three months after the end of 'The Prevailing Counterpoint', and builds on characters and events elaborated therein. TPC is probably not required reading if you accept that Dumbledore and Snape are dead; that Lupin, Tonks and Fred are alive, and that Slytherins are fundamentally neurotic.
